They are always good for scaring away birds, or most creatures that is. Other than cats. ;)

What I have done in the past to clean my laser is use a electronics friendly cloth to wipe away greasy smudges. If you have dust behind the lens however, try buying a can of compressed air to blow dust out from under the lens. If that doesn't work you might have to replace it. Hope it helps.
