Usually, but not always, you can trace these kinds of problems to the big 4. Memory, Hard drive, video card, CPU.
I'd run the suggested memory diagnostics and then the hard drive test.

The Sony DSC-V3 which you can pick up for next to nothing has a 4 color RGB sensor (it adds cyan) and is good for beamshots.
DJNY - The 20d is still a good camera, though I would want a pretty good deal on it. You will get full manual control which is a big plus.

Awesome review of this light, Erns. I always enjoy reading your flashlight impressions. I really like the Defier series as well, but I am a little biased. :)
I really like the user interface on that light! I'm curious about the strobe feature. I've found some lights have strobes that are VERY uncomfortable to look at whereas some are just moderately annoying.
