Noob in over his head with 12 Watt diode collimation

I have some batteries out of my old laptop that should do the trick, I also already have a charger circuit for them. Also, I can't think of too many uses for a portable 12Watt laser. Aside from blinding people or a really cool cigarette lighter. Maybe tripping the laser-lock alerts on military...

Noob in over his head with 12 Watt diode collimation

In all seriousness, I haven't even powered them up yet, and intend to only do so when I feel it will be safe. I just recently bought an IR detector plate and am shopping around for safe power supplies or parts to build one. After that I'll still need mounting hardware, some way of mounting and...

Noob in over his head with 12 Watt diode collimation

As long as I keep my eyes out of the beam and wear my goggles I think I'll be fairly safe. As far as dangerous shit goes, that's pretty much how I roll. I've been playing with Tesla coils and explosives and shit since I was 13, I'll admit lasers add a bit more range to the danger than I'm used...

Noob in over his head with 12 Watt diode collimation

Yes, rigging the lenses and all that using only a dremel and other hand tools should be a challenging project. Something to pass the time as I slip slowly into madness in my last semester of college, which consists of solid humanities courses... As to the detector cards, I'm hoping my digital...

Noob in over his head with 12 Watt diode collimation

Yeah, I got safety goggles. See the link I posted at the bottom of the first post. A bit pricey but I couldn't find any other filters that were cheaper and offered the same optical density in my wavelength.

Thanks a bunch dude, just ordered four lenses, cost me 43 bucks. Less than what it would have cost to buy one new one. Got two lenses with a 9mm focal length and 2 lenses with a 24.4mm focal length. Hopefully they wont melt when I pump 942nm light through them.

Noob in over his head with 12 Watt diode collimation

Guess I'll figure up money and order some coated cylinder lenses from thor labs. Anyone know a cheaper place to get cylindrical lenses for near IR? I'm not too worried about powering them, my friend designs power supplies for a living. I'll just trade him one of the diodes for a custom board...

Yeah I''m hoping so, I left my tap set back in Colorado.

Noob in over his head with 12 Watt diode collimation

I was asking about the die itself. Yeah, that's a no then, at least for now. I don't even have a temp controlled iron yet. I'm just looking for options for mounting the darn things, they look really awkward and I don't have any pics of the underside. Really hoping there's some threaded holes...

Noob in over his head with 12 Watt diode collimation

I love a challenge... What really scares me is the different numbers on each of the \| |/ things. Notice the far right module has a 02 where the other two have 01's in the picture Prototype linked in.

Noob in over his head with 12 Watt diode collimation

That's kind of what I was thinking, I guess that means the thumb screw is there to hold the electrodes down against the heat sink then. If that's the case then do you suppose the wafer will be loose to where I could remove it and package it myself? Like say against an old CPU heat sink? Do...

    Noob looking for advice.

Noob in over his head with 12 Watt diode collimation

Ok here's the deal, I saw this deal on eBay for three 12Watt 942nm diodes for 20 bucks and I felt my manhood was on the line if I didn't buy em so they're presumably in the USPS on their way here as we speak. Link to the ebay auction (he has more): NICE - 3 NEW? 942nm Laser Diode Modules - WOW...

    Noob looking for advice.

Yeah, I've been to plenty of sites where spoon-feeding really killed meaningful discussion. I didn't include any info here because I doubt it's the right place to ask questions anyways, just giving you a brief introduction to me and my situation. I'll create a new thread somewhere that looks...

    Noob looking for advice.

I'm fairly new to the laser world and am joining the forum looking for advice about diode lasers. I recently bought some 12Watt 942nm YAG pump lasers (they aren't here yet) and have a bunch of old dvd drive/burner diodes I've been playing with but wanted to get some more info, advice, and...
