I ran across this:
2.5 mile range laser gun keeps Somali pirates at bay - ELEKTOR.com | Electronics: Microcontrollers Embedded Audio Digital Analogue Test Measurement
and they are using this against the Somalian pirates and the U.S. Army uses this too.
I wonder how it works?

I purchased a cheap (8 USD including shipping) eBay 5mW green laser pointer to use as a host (it looks like laserlands short nose pointer). However, it seems to function very well for the price. Nice, bright and clean beam.
Well, to the question. I checked some disassembly guides to get an idea...
Solved the power supply problem, by lowering the limit resistor value to 3,6 ohms and now I can go to 400mA and higher and now it burns good. :lasergun:

Check my post in Red Lasers section about diode id.
I took one out of a LG GSA4167. Do your diode markings match mine?
I used the LM317 based driver and drive it at 350mA and it burns nicely

Hello to everybody.
I have a little problem identifying a diode.
I salvaged it from an LG DVD 16X burner (GSA-4167).
Only markings on the diode are:
L96
5747
and that's it.
I built the adjustable driver (LM317) for ot and I'm getting maximum current of 276mA from it, but I have no specs for...
