LED driver as laser diode driver

Ok thanks for your help, I will keep everyone posted on the design. It's a number of months out from completion just bought a house and time is limited currently.

LED driver as laser diode driver

THANK YOU!!!! Thanks for such great responses. I'll order one and some test components. It seems like it would have way more functionality than a similar lm317 circuit. I'll hook it up to the scope and do a comparison of overshoot when switching with this vs the lm317. Will be a while but I'll...

    Laserdriver 2.2V 700mA wanted

The sticky at the top of the thread provides a great resource for you to see some tested drivers if you don't want to make your own. http://laserpointerforums.com/f67/driver-specifications-compendium-78942.html

LED driver as laser diode driver

Please correct me if I'm wrong but the source of light for a LASER is a diode. As long as the electrical characteristics are the same could I use this LED driver for my laser? NCL30160 datasheet It lists a maximum current of 1.5A and can be configured for any load, has enable and extremely high...

What is the rating on a laser diode?

Anyone interested in the details of power ratings on lasers this articles does a decent job: http://www.coherent.com/downloads/aboutmeasuringlaserpowerndenergyoutputfinal.pdf The exert that answered my question: The power of a laser is measured in Watts (and often reported in terms of nW, mW...

What is the rating on a laser diode?

Searching both this forum and google somehow didn't result in an answer. If I have a 300mw laser diode what does that mean? It can handle 300mw of power? The data sheet says it has a 2.2V operating voltage and a max operating current of 400mA thats 880mw! So what does this rating represent?

I think i burned out my laser?

I did attach a test load first although because my diode had a 2.2V drop i only used 4 1n4007 diodes in series to simulate the LD. I did however use the same method for current testing as breaking the circuit and putting it in series with my multimeter.

I think i burned out my laser?

I'll post some pictures later but to measure the current I pulled the lead from the diode out and ran it in series with my multimeter. I'll subscribe to the thought that i've LEDed my diode. I don't have a filtering cap on the output, only on the input. Eventually I would like to have it...

I think i burned out my laser?

I'm building my first laser project with the end goal being a laser engraver capable of cutting vinyl. The diode I chose was a 300mw 808nm: 808nm 300mW 5 6mm TO18 High Power Burning Infrared IR Red Laser Diode Lab 2 2V | eBay I made a driver with an lm317T and bought this casing: 808nm Laser...

    intro

Wow this forum seems to be very popular. My name is Mike and i'm Electrical engineering working in the semiconductor industry. I'm from northern Idaho but now live in the Boise area and I'm adjusting to life there. Mainly enjoy working on cars but i'm broadening my hobbies. Hope to eventually...
