I'm still afraid to post something if I have a question that has been answered before, but still just dont quite seem to get/understand it, so I just pm DTR or Flaminpyro. They have been the most helpful to me in my time here

Even if it has been answered before, technology always changes
and so do the solutions..

Asking in the forum means others can benefit from the answers.
If it had all been done by PM since the start of the forum, there
wouldn't be any content.

Many subjects need to be touched on a little further.
When you start into something both expensive and
complicated, everybody can benefit from a little more on
a given topic..

I've been here for about 2 1/2 years. But I was playing around with lasers since I was a kid. I think I bought my first green laser back in 03. I think I paid 100 bucks for it from Fry's.

At the age of 10 the movie 'Real Genius' came out. I was hooked.
A guy came to our school from the power company for a presentation,
he broke out a (what I now know as) a 1mW He/Ne pointer. (IIRC Dave
scored the same one on ebay a while back..)

I went home and tried to replicate this magical light with an old
telescope and red LED. Couldn't understand at the time why it
wasn't the same, but at least got a dot on the wall a few feet away. :D

I have owned many since, and with the birth of the internet and
low cost parts, I have had some serious fun in the recent years.

If you are truly hooked there is no walking away from this hobby... :eg:

I remember being here back in like ~07, learned how to build my first red when the diodes cost more like $50 than $5. Burned the thing out in like a month and kinda lost interest, was too expensive for a high school budget... Can't remember what my old username was, but I think I only had like 1 post anyway.

I agree, it was just when I was a brand new newbie on this site, that everythingh I asked, even tho it was posted with answers, and I just didn't understand completely, some users made me feel like a retarded asshole that needed to go buy a flashlight instead haha.

I joined here within the first year this forum was going, and posts were pretty scarce then. The real jump start to this forum and the hobby in general was Senkat's group buy of 16X laser diodes. Before that, there was not much DIY because there was no information on topic. Once users started posting YouTube videos of their DIY lasers, this place took off like a rocket.

I still have one of those SenKat "GB" diodes in an old labby I built, still runs to this day. A little piece of LPF history. :D

For me too...

Gazoo was a great help!

It would be nice to see him back.. Wonder if hes keeping
track of the latest things like 1W of 445 for under 50$ and
class 4 blurays.

I remember using 40$ PS3 sleds to get 20-30mW of 405.
The power of the these diodes when he left were nothing
compared to now...

Im sure he would be getting good use of the AMC 7135
(the first to use these boards on LPF) and his TEC setups...

Ahh the good ole days

Interesting thread :)

Nice to readup on all of the previous drama I missed before I joined, I remember when blurays were the new colours on the market, not quite as mainstream as these 445nm's have been though.
