I am from the UK, and I'm happy that nobody has guns. Sure, I may not have one to protect myself, but it means the attacker won't have one to attack me with! It works this way with anything. At least a knife doesn't travel at 800ft per second.

Anyone ever used a laser for self-defense?! I can't imagine someone wanting to bother me when they know I can instantly blind them, forever. (Just a thought - safety comes first!)

oh so because guns are illegal, that MUST mean that the criminals can NOT get them either right???? NO! NO, very very wrong.

Well of course there are some criminals in highly organized gangs that get their hands on them. in fact very recently there has been a murder, I won't hide the facts.

But it's a different story, you don't hear of 8 year kids getting hit by stray lead during a drive by. Or some kid running into his school and gunning down his entire class. Or some dude running up in a church and spraying wildly. Ever been randomly attacked? I have, and I'm glad there were no guns involved, it may have been a different story if it was America. It often is.

Uh huh

Right, because criminals follow the law and won't get any illegal guns :tired:

So you are "happy" that you don't have any guns, but then you ask about using a laser for self defense (to blind an attacker, bad bad idea!!!)

So what if they have a laser to blind you back? Maybe they should ban lasers in the UK so people can't blind each other.

For the record, blinding a criminal is far worse than shooting one. First, the eyes are a hard target to aim for. You can hit the perp in one eye, and he uses the other eye to lunge at you with his knife and stabs you, then steals your laser.

And if you manage to survive the encounter, you will get nuked into oblivion in a court of law.

At least with a gun, depending what caliber and where you aim, there's a chance the person that got shot makes a full recovery. Not as bad in court for you.

But I'm sure you're a 16 year old kid, so that's ok, I don't blame you for your way of thinking.

how is he lying??? that's what you said!!!!

This is what happens when someone is indoctrinated to react by emotions and not logic.

He thinks guns are bad. He's glad "no one owns any" (dead wrong, probably 1/4 of the criminals in that country are armed).

But he wants to get a laser for self defense, because he'll "scare away" the criminal with a threat of blinding them. I don't think he understands how criminals work.

And I forgot to mention the fact of the extreme irresponsibility of firing a high powered laser beam in a direction where it can go into people's homes, or cars. If you're lucky enough not to hit a poor kid in the eye who's just minding his business, you might hit someone's windshield, and scare them into having a car accident.

This is why in gun circles there's always talk about the penetration of rounds, and how in most circumstances, if you have to shoot someone in self defense, you don't want that round to exit, so an innocent doesn't get hit by accident.

I'm afraid you are mistaken.. I'm going to have to lay this out to make it simple for you guys.

This is what I said:
"Anyone ever used a laser for self-defense?! I can't imagine someone wanting to bother me when they know I can instantly blind them, forever. (Just a thought - safety comes first!)"

and i was accused of..
"then instantly ask for a laser, that looks like a gun, to blind people with."

I didn't ask for a laser that looks like a gun
I didn't even ask for a laser
I didnt say I wanted to blind someone

I asked others if they have ever been in that situation, stated that an attacker may know of the dangerous potential and stay away, (therefore not even having to use it!!), and even finished with "(Just a thought - safety comes first!)"

You talk about logic, yet you don't read the very discussion you are talking about.

Where is the logic in that? You think I am some 16 year old kid and you are arguing with me over the internet.. think about that for a second.. it may make you realise why you like having big powerful guns around you to make you feel safe

its sad too

As if the criminal is going to know all about lasers and that they are hazards of differing levels at various output levels.

Would work well if the criminals were birds---probably scare them away.

Flashblinding someone at distance is more than possible giivng extra time to take whatever action--if the situation is correct for that which is how the military and some law enforcement groups use them.

In general civilian self defense is not the usual thing however. If you were able to effectively flashblind someone chances of being arrested for doing it and/or sued by the guy you did it to and losing are huge.

:wtf:

How does he having guns have anything to do with arguing with you?

I'm the one who said you are 16 years old, because you sound like it.

You're complaining that you didn't say you wanted a laser that looks like a gun.

Let's look at your post:

I am from the UK, and I'm happy that nobody has guns. and you know this...why? because your government says so? Do you think all the criminals handed in their guns when they became illegal? Sure, I may not have one to protect myself, but it means the attacker won't have one to attack me with! so you with nothing against a guy with a knife will end up better than if you both had guns? It works this way with anything. At least a knife doesn't travel at 800ft per second. no but the perp can stab you in 800ms before you even know what hit ya.

Anyone ever used a laser for self-defense?! so you are interested in self defense with a device that has ranged capability, lol I can't imagine someone wanting to bother me when they know I can instantly blind them, forever. no, as another poster mentioned, the regular joe isn't even aware that there are lasers that can instantly blind. "Threatening" a perp with a laser might elicit a laugh at the most (Just a thought - safety comes first!) so that means you have to make sure you are wearing your goggles all the time when you carry your laser, and then be 100% sure you are only going to hit the perp in the eyes. Not that it matters, because even if you could somehow hit a guy in both eyes before he can evade, either you get lunged at with a knife, or you get arrested and do some serious time for permanently harming another human being when he just wanted your wallet

So did we get it wrong?

As if the criminal is going to know all about lasers and that they are hazards of differing levels at various output levels.

A laser that is defocused might be capable of a temporary blindness, but still carries a high risk of permanent damage.

I would personally love a "Star Trek" phaser like device, that would allow a perp to be stunned while you run away or call for help. Unfortunately, there's nothing of the sort. Usually if you have to consider self defense, it's a do or die type of deal.

okay!! what ever you say. now can we stop killing the thread???

To re-rail the thread, I wanted to build a laser inside a Next Generation Playmates hand phaser.

It wouldn't be authentic though unless I use a red diode, and it would take a lot of power to get a visible beam.

I might still do it in 520nm and to hell with authenticity :)

Wow this thread got stupid, quick. I think the last thing you need is a laser of ANY kind. Clearly you wouldn't be able to handle it.
