Hey All,
So, I had been seeing these Duracell flashlights at Costco for a while now and finally decided to grab one and see if I could gut it out and possibly use it as a host.

I couldn't find the item on Costco's website to provide a link, but it's the "Duracell Durabeam Ultra 1000 lumens". I believe it was in the $20-30 price range, aluminum host, with a black ano finish. It uses a rubber o-ring to slide focus the beam, which I figured I could work around.

I managed to remove the head by sliding out and turning... However, it looks as though this actually just unscrewed the driver/pill assembly from the battery tube.

Now I need to find a way to open / unscrew the lens retainer to further disassemble the head... unfortunately, it appears they didn't want people tampering with the LED and driver, as I can't seem to unscrew it. I even tried using some of that rubbery no-slip drawer liner material to try and unscrew it, thinking maybe I just needed to break the glue seal with no luck. :undecided:

I'm including some shots of the parts. Does anyone have any suggestions or tips as to disassembling the head without damaging or scratching the outer surface? Is this a promising host to use, or should I just look elsewhere? Keep in mind I'm aware of the SL hosts... I'm just looking for something larger.

Not sure how it comes apart without having it in hand but if you need anything built for it like a heatsink let me know.

Thanks Ehgemus! I'll keep that in mind. If I get it taken apart and can move forward with it, I'll definitely need a heatsink :)
