Very nice build you have made and it looks good too

Yes some plugs would be nice, maybe a mono ear phone jack for the pickup unit and maybe a usb plug for charging and data logging.

Good on you man

Is it really worth $200 considering they will be calibrated against your Ophir? For that cash I would expect it to be calibrated against a professional meter. Why wouldn't someone just take the $200 and get their own Ophir which is know to be calibrated against a professional meter? Seriously, if you are asking that kind of price tag you should be able to afford a real meter to calibrate against, and you should have a range of continuous duty lab lasers to do the calibrating. You will obviously loose a lot of accuracy if you calibrate them with your handheld (unstable) lasers.

At <$100 these problems would be acceptable but I would never buy it for $200, especially considering what else is on the market in the same price range.

Idk about $200, but depending on the final design, and features, it doesn't seem like an unreasonable price if the unit has an on board battery, as well as the option for datalogging, and of course decent response time...

Besides, this LPM is 100% targeted an hobbyists... a +/- 5-10% difference is not likely to be that huge of a concern.

Hmm, a 1602 LCD display + FTDI asic for datalogging. Seems kinda familiar for some reason.
Best of luck with your meter a course. I'd be curious as to your ADC resolution and how your going to pull that off all they way up to 5W.

Ya its a coincidence,
I had these boards made in July, but was too busy with summer finals to work on them.

My adc is 16 bit (15 bit if you consider that my signal should never be negative)
and my reference is set to have a range of ~8W
Gives me a resolution of 250 uW internally

Nope, I'm afaraid mine is 150W/cm^2

I dont have any spare heads to sell at this time,
I actually have more LPM's than heads right now...lol

Is an Ophir somehow not a professional meter, What is it then?
Do you know that if you go try to buy an Ophir 20c-a form ophir they will charge you 750$

and as I said my calibration and price are still up in the air right now.

Who said anything about using unstable hand held lasers lol?
I calibrate against a 445 lab laser with a large heatsink,
allowed to run for several hours and come to complete thermal equilibrium.

And considering I said I was shooting for a price < laserbees cheapest meter,
There isn't anything in this price range...

Fantastic progress--way to go!

Nice clean work.

Definitely ther acrylic model if you have to choose between one or the other.

When do you expect to be able to accept LPM orders for delivery within a reasonable time frame?

My next step is to make another revision of the board.
I think I will use an SMD Atmega328p
I am also going to put the FTDI chip on the board, instead of in the cable.

Not sure about my time frame, I start classes on monday.
It will depend on how hard they are...

OK--keep up the good work and put me on the list for one as soon as final release is available for purchase.

PM me when you are ready to roll and we can work out the details at that time.

I must say that a 5W capable LPM that looks that nice and doesn't require a ritualistic sacrifice of my wallet is very appealing. I will be keeping my eyes on this thread for updates as I am extremely interested

Heavy silicone insulated wires (maybe 18 or 20 AWG) with headphone plug connections seem like they would add resilience to bending and accidental hits from laser beams.

Why not run these on a single 18650 since we all (I would think :P) have a stock pile of these around and we can just charge them externally? Not to mention the "oh shit my LPM is dead" moment when you just drop in a new 18650 and are up and rolling again.
