Experience with RS232C (optical) ? Optical to standard RS232 port conversion?

Just curious if anyone else has a DMM with an optical output? If so, is there a way of converting the output from optical to a standard RS232 port?

Just thought I put out the question.

I have done some searching, and there are optical adapters, but I'd really like a solid connection for data logging with my Hioki3808.

Any advice would be great thanks.

There aren't any instructions on that with your DMM? I figure the only thing your DMM does is spit out whatever the screen displays to the output port. So you'd switch to the optical sensor mode (assuming it exists), connect the DMM to your COM port, and watch the numbers roll in.

You can also make your own with a sufficiently calibrated and amplified optical sensor, like a photo-diode/transistor connected to a microcontroller's ADC. Arduinos are really easy to setup for that.

Nope. The instructions hint at a very old now outdated RC232C adapter using the back clear window.
I discovered it was actually an IR digital output. But the manual is so poorly written, I was scratching my head. Engrish and Korean.
good to know.

I have one- I bought it in about 2007. I seldom use the logging function, I have the instructions and the cable somewhere, I'll dig them out for you.

Mine is very simple, just a photodiode and an LED I think connected straight to a lead with a DB9 on one end. Its about 9600 baud from memory.

That sounds about right. 9600 baud is basically the standard for these kinds of meters. Pretty slow.

Oh I understand what you mean now. I thought you meant you wanted to use some optical sensor (input) on the DMM and then output stuff over a RS232 connection from a cable in the back.

Maybe the output is just IRDA?

yes. it is an IRDA based meter. I'd like to get rid of the IR port and go copper off the meter, RS232 or just USB.

The meter I have is a Digitech, bought from Jaycar. I have been unable to find the cable yet (the house is a mess as my daughter just moved in). The cable is completely sealed, and I remember it had special logging software, but I have looked at the output and it was simple 9k6 baud RS232.

I am fairly certain all you really need is an optical transistor and an LED, I think its fairly simple..

It's a bit hard to see in the image, but its just two optical windows and two threaded nuts that the cable screws onto
