Haha, don't you know how these things start? First we're all just being buddy buddy until someone steps on someone else's shoes :P.

BACK TO THE TOPIC~ Who're the candidates for the spare PCBs you said you were going to give out? I'd never be able to get the thing working, so I'm not asking for myself, but still, I like to know things .

Default Re: "X-Load" A Custom 10A Testload All-In-One Unit

In All seriousness though. I dint want to explain in great details every little thing i was doing and plained to do and thought a simple "I dont want to deal with that now" would end it.

I had alot of the parts already on hand. "Ill repeat that" I had alot of the parts on hand In fact everything but volt displays and Iam sure iam not the only one that has a shit load of parts laying around that from time to time makes projects from. Not always does someone want to order new parts right away or even at all.

I had the 1 ohm resistor on hand. I had a few so i decided to make this handheld unit Now rather then wait till i place the order. for parts..

"SINCE I HAVE 3 BOARDS"

The reason i put the 20A rating on it was because i was going to place an order sometime in the near future for parts Like mentioned above from digikey and i would have added the resistor i needed, rather then paying the 10$ + shipping just for 1 resistor.

Being that the boards cost me $40 i wanted to use them all up.!

So since i have 2 cases i was going to Make 2 testloads possible 3 in a even larger case:

The One in the OP will and "Was" only going to be used for around 3A and Maybe 5-6A for a few seconds if the second one was being used since i do test multiple drivers side by side. Thats why i said disregard the rating.

Had i been given the chance too i would have shown the second project Testload when the parts where ordered.

I guess a simple "I dont want to deal with that now" is not good enough anymore.

Everyone must have had thier smarties this morning.

Default Re: "X-Load" A Custom 10A Testload All-In-One Unit

Wow, I was just thinking about trying to make a super test load myself. I have been messing with high power LED drivers made for like 8-9A and need something just like this.

I would be interested in grabbing one as a built unit or pieces or however you would want to do it if you are selling one. I already have one of Clif's nice 3A selectable loads but I can't test nearly enough on it. I understand that you don't want to take other people's business and I respect that but I can't say that I have seen a test load that will reliably go high enough for my needs until now.

I just have one question, how are you going to change the number of diodes when it is screwed inside the box?

Am I missing something ?

EDIT: OWWWW wait, I have missed the part with the magnets sorry

Excuse the late respinse, but There are no test loads which go to 20A, or even close to that I can find, I don't think anyone would see this as stepping into another members market.

Actually, we will be offering a 20A nominal, 30A maximum test load soon, and we won't be stepping on anyone's toes.

Chris, That was an old Comment before i worked with Jeff. He was selling testloads at the time. Regardless of the Max rating.

At that time i had another testload i dint post after this thread died out that was an ADJ load to 10A. I posted about it somewhere on the forum.

I found that was the only way to go.

The Original design like you see in this thread and or that dint have the displays that i sell here and there now to 5A trying to Use a Low Ohm Resistors Lower then 1ohm like say .1,.01 or .001 to give you higher AMP rating gave to much error in the reading and you had to adj your display to correct it. Atleast what i noticed.

I never finished either of the project back then because the one in the OP held me toll now but funny thing is a couple months ago it came back up with the new high current diodes coming out and the new drivers coming out. So i will finish them and they will be available.

Ill sell it with Jeff when i finish them and decide which one is best.

I just dont like posting about things that are not finished and ready to make available. This is why i have not said much about it.

This was the original 10A one I made: (These where proto's so the text and diodes where not correct in these images)

But as i said the .01 resistor was giving to much of a off current then the 1 ohm.

SO i made this one up to 5A/6A MAX with just a 1ohm:

which lasted up until recent diodes.
I cant find pics of the adj one. Not sure if even took any.

So once i finish the new versions ill have them up for anyone to get.

RHD, Thats what ive been linking too for thoses needing higher then the normal 5A range testload.

That's great, I have a future project which needs 15 amps of current, TheLightningStalker already built the line driver for me and i have a diode and host, so getting closer to assembly but am I reading this right, the new load is limited to 10 amps?

Sincerely investigate any of these three short quotes as new concepts and you've taken your first step into a larger world:

"I regard consciousness as fundamental. I regard matter as derivative from consciousness..." - Max Planck. "Everything we call real is made of things that cannot be regarded as real" - Neils Bohr. "What we call physical things and events do not exist independently of subjective experience..." - Deepak Chopra.

Each of these three rabbit holes go deep, ending up in the same place.

Useless troll fighting.

No it will not be limited to 10A. That was Just at the time Years ago sounded like enough.LOL. 20A would be the MAX i have in mind but iam sure it could do more if need be.

I will more then likely OS the boards too to make is available for DIY since alot of it is Large parts it makes it easier for DIY'ers. Plus Cheaper. Or just sell blank boards with the part lists also as an option. As even the 5A testload i sell now here and there above is Fairly expensive due to the large size of the board and its thickness,Diodes and resistor and drilling and machining the sink if one choose the extra sink i made the board for.. Thats Part of the reason why i dont Advertise the testload now and or the entire testload kit because its price. So a new smaller design will be needed.

You can even use the 5A testload board i have now and just change out the resistor and diodes and boom you got yourself a 20A+ testload. its tht simple.

I also Made a test board for testing and setting driver's. I have a few different sizes now:

I have a universal one in the works too that can test many different drivers sizes so you dont have to have 1 test board for every driver.

None the less as i mentioned i hate posting about things that are not ready yet. it gets everyone excited and might be weeks or months away from the final product and i dont like making people wait. So hopefully it be ready soon enough. Ive learned in the past the hard way never post something until its done because if it falls through or doesnt turn out the way you original thought well...

The One RHD shows and designed is Very similar to the first Picture original 10A design one i show that has the 2 resistors on it above. Its the same concept pretty much. I can very easily beef that up to more then 10A right now. 20A-30A would be no problem to do that way.

The Problem is at least with what i was seeing then is using .1,.01 etc resistors the Current does not match the 1 ohm resistor current because of the different resistor tolerances being slight off and more error the lower you go then the 1 ohm resistor.

So while 1 ohm might show 3A when you switch it over to say the .1 ohm resistor it will show 2.85A or whatever. Its just an example to show what iam talking about. They never matched. So EXAMPLE again if you set a driver for 3A on a 1 ohm reisistor testload setup when you switched to a .1ohm testload setup say it would show off like 2.85A..... I dint like the error i was seeing.

So you need a display that you can "Calibrate it" to match. At least thats what i have noticed back then.

So its something i will revisit and try to work out now that Ive been working on a new load for these new diodes..

There is a few designs iam tossing around to see what will work best/ cheapest.

So iam sure either from me or someone else will have a testload out soon enough for your demand. So you should be ok on that project. 15A project Sounds intresting.
