Hey guys. My friend came across 50+ laptops that he was scraping for the gold etc. I told him that I wanted some of the dvd drives and he asked me about the battery packs. We cracked a few open and they are stuffed full of Samsung icr 18650's. The laptops and battery packs worked before he got a hold of them.
I told him yes to the packs but now have way to many to deal with. Is there any value in these? Or should I take them to an e waste.

Well, I am certainly interested in some, and I'm sure that others are too. You could sell them and make some free money :)

Just dispose of them.

The batteries in them are not worth the postage to ship them.

Everyone that can afford a laser can afford a new/fresh battery also.

Na don't throw them out. If they work then they're worth keeping. How much do you want to sell them for? How many do you have? You can make good portable powerbanks with those.

Despite being 12 years old used Samsung 18650 24Es from old laptops if they are tested and still good they are worth something--you're right.

How many do you have? Do you have all 50 battery packs? That's a minimum of 200 batteries or maybe more. Put up a thread in B/S/T to sell them. With your name and low rep people won't buy from you so it may take up to a year but you will sell them. Break them up into 10 at a time and sell for $10 + shipping and people will buy them.

Buy/build several lasers and/or flashlights that take those batteries and you will be set for batteries for life!! :D

Parallel several packs and you've got a nice supply for an inverter. Just be sure you know how to charge cells in series.

No. You're forgetting lithium cells have a rated life of something like 5 years. I'd venture a guess they're already past that point. They're still adequate after that 5 year rating, but the capacity slowly goes down and internal resistance goes up. They'll be all-but-useless in another few years.

They are 12 years old already -- battery mfg. date is 2003 according to image posted by OP in post #4, so...

Then, take them apart and get the lithium out of them :D. Just kidding, this is way too dangerous. Just get rid of them.

I suppose I will try to sell them. I could hook them up to my charger and put them under a load and see what happens. But there is a shit load of batteries and that will take forever.
I also have the diodes from the dvd drives. Maybe I should make something with the burning diode. What types of diodes are in a dvd rw? One for reading the disc and one for writing? Is the writing diode infrared?

My buddy said the same thing. He said tweekers use them to make meth. I know they use energizer lithium batteries for this but didn't think they could use li-on. But then again lithium is lithium after a little cleaning up

Not that I have any interest in doing just that.

Not much point in using them unless the drive was 16x oe higher, otherwise they will just be low power diodes made for reading discs.

Just keep in mind that some of the individual batteries in the battery packs may be bad. I got 4 battery packs and one pack was bad and a few (1-3) of the individual batteries in the other packs were bad also.

You can weed out some of the bad ones as a first pass by metering the voltage on the individual cells. Anything below ~2.8V is bad.
