Re: BlitzBuck V3, Available Soon!

To Arg: Odd - it should not be getting that warm at all in low power mode - some warmth is okay, but too much is... very bizarre.

It wasn't getting as warm as in high power mode, but if I left it on for around 60~ seconds it would be hot to the touch.

To Jander: It didn't seem like the ramping up was too much from what I saw in the video - from 2.05A to 2.09A in about 30 seconds.

It's not usually the same, sometime it hops between 2A and 2.03A and sometimes it goes from 2A to as much as 2.1A

EDIT: I just had a thought. Is it possible that the small black chip near the edge of the board is getting warm? That may indicate a problem as well, because that should not be getting warm at all.

I can't really tell since the heatsinks next to is are generating so much heat that I can't tell where it's coming from. My IR thermometer can't get at it either since the area is takes the reading from it a little to large.

Hmm, alright. Will take all of that into consideration.... Especially the fact that it is hopping differently. Is it possible that it is a heat related issue? The ICs may not be properly soldered to the board (the exposed pad on the bottom of the IC) so even with large aluminum heatsinks touching the plastic, that won't suffice.

If you stuck one in the freezer for a few minutes and then tried it, would the same thing take place?

Do you actually want me to do that? :p I could stick it in a plastic bag with silica gel, but there might still be moisture that could get to the driver.

Maybe just stick it in the fridge with some silica =p Don't want it to short, but we should test if it's temperature based or not.

Don't forget it! D: And set up a rig to test it right when you take it out. Or better yet, put your whole test rig in there so you can test it directly after it comes out.

Okay, I left it in there for a while until it was very cold to the touch. I hooked it up right after taking it out and it started doing the same thing, even though it was frosty cold.

That is so odd. I have absolutely no idea what to say to it. I'll just have to take a look at it when I get it from jander.

If you got a non-working one, talk to Clif. I think he still has an emergency supply to do swaps for those who got defective units. But how are you sure it's not working?

Wired it as in the scheme from clifs's site. Hooked the wires to a 3amp test load. Connected 2x imr 3.7V cells to it. Nothing zero output soldered a jumper for high, nothing.

Is there anything between the two pins on the small black chip? I can't see from the picture.

Which small black chip? :p if you mean the 8 pin component, no.

EDIT: oh whait i see what you mean.. Well i believe if i remember correctly the small chip that is next to the positive lead. No, i thought about that with soldering the leads, that i had to be carefull not to solder anything together.

Greetings,

Wolfman:

I'm sending offroadfreak the last spare board I have on hand, as opposed to waiting on the return since he posted everything to see for us here. That way he can finish his build without further delay :san:
