"SXB-2 V8"





So the SXB is final here.:wave:





"SXB" Stand for !!!.Super X-Boost.!!!


I know alot of you have been waiting to be able to use this driver to drive your 9mm diodes off 1 cell Above 2A down to the proper 3.6v or less for some time now...

Most remember the Original SXB thread here:

The original SXB had its limitation that i was not happy with. Mainly heat at higher currants. Was not able to control it at 2.4A output. So i was not happy with those becoming available for you guys at the time. So i went for the larger brother package.


So then came this Version.....



The "SXB-2 V8"


The design and though behind this driver was simply 9mm 445nm diodes all the way.

People are running them as high as 2.6A.!

So we needed something capable of that or Above and the SXB Solves that.


With the drivers available now including my X-Boost there are limitation to them.... I wont get into to many details but Mainly the switch on the drivers are not high enough to properly boost anything above 2A down to 3.6V without maxing out the switch or very close to it. Again to be clear Iam not saying they cant but saying they are very close to maxing out at 2A or higher etc especially when the cell starts to drop voltage.


I did alot of thinking on this driver. I made the driver 26mm round and a flat bottom with some exposed copper to be mounted flat to a heatsink. Now i dint have much control over the size of the board but really 26mm is dead perfect for such a monster driver...


Anyone that is running at 2.4A with any boost drive will need a beefy host and in that case pretty much all beefy hosts can fit this driver. I was going for the best performance not size.!

However with that said i will be making another version that is either a 2 sided board or a dual board setup so that i can make the driver smaller for the crazy ones that want to use it in a Thinner host.:na: However dont expect to see that too soon.

I made 2 Holes on the board so you can run your wires out them for your voltage input.

I recommend you use 22AWG wire at least for the driver. Especially at the Higher Currant.


Good quality cells are also a must.!


The Driver is Pot Adj and has 2 selectable ranges. A simple Bridge across the 2 resistors and thats it.

There is Also a Fixed Version for those that dont want to deal with the Pot.:)


The Driver is Continuous GND as well. Thanks to the Zentex Op amp that RHD said to try out some time ago. I have a diffrent op amp that i have been playing with so future version will have a diffrent Op amp. THough not much diffrent in performance just i prefer it.:)



So about 6 months later i give you the final look at the SXB-2 V8.

Edit: You say 3+ A whats the max? It might be a great driver for an XM-L2 emitter too?

Its ~4.5A MAX with a Load of 5V. :whistle:

So it would be even higher then that with a Lower load like an XML-LED. Probably ~ 6A but thats just a guess.

You will have to stay under the load though. So iam not sure you would be able to run it off 4.2v.

What is the load voltage of an XML at the currant you want and ill check if its possible.
 
I like the driver having continuous gnd. It makes some build much easier. I am already using thicker AWG24 wires for my high power builds and AWG22 is even better.
Also a good quality li-ion battery is a must because of the massive current draw of the driver.

Can you ship a few drivers along with the 5W 650nm laserdiode ?

Yeah for sure good cells are a must. But even them your still beating on them.:D Check the video out if you dint. I did some cell tests in it. Ill be sure to do more in the next video. But yeah cells are really important.

Your diode is Arriving tomorrow i think. Shipping Saterday. Iam not sure if i can have drivers made too by then. PM me and we can figure something out...

Anyways, diodes that run at 3A will heat up fast uh? I'm designing a thermal protection system that would sent a TTL sig... I'd just like to know if there is any possibility to modulate TTL (low freq.) to your schematic? @ some OP-amp input or something like that?

I've been trying to direct drive (with big lumps of copper) between 5 - 6 A, but TBH a regulated 5 - 5.5 A ;) would be much better! I have problems with the battery potential sagging...:(:beer:

Well this driver is pretty much designed or at least the thought i was thinking was 9mm 445nm diodes. For 5.6mm M140 they can just use my standard X-Boost if they decide to use my drivers that is...

SO in that case most will only run those diodes from 2A-2.6A....

When i say the 3A+ iam just saying there is alot more room to spare had we need it but no one is going to run a 9mm 445nm diode that hard after they seen my pop video on them.

So typically you would have a 9mm build at those currants in a large size host.

The driver already has a cut off for heat protection. Though its probably not as cool as the one your making.:) "Its just the built in one"

So yes a build at say 3W+ is going to get hot if you leave it on too long. Any build will. But mostly its not the driver thats the issue but the diode. SO having a Cut off would be a Nice reminder.


@grainde I will check for you later but if your saying your running them at 5A+ then that should not be an issue off a 4.2v cell. Though again let me check to see before i can confirm.:) It should be above the load + drop at those currants.

I tried a regular XML at 3A and it was to low of load to use with 4.2v but these XML you show me seem to be able to take more currant there for a higher load and should work just fine.:)

I understand that, Angelos. :) I haven't played with the 9mm diodes yet...

But I'm planning something that would make use of a simple TTL... Something simple, like @ 50ºc = red led, @60ºc = TTL 0v = laser shutdown. But thats not the place for talking about this :D

Can your driver have that? TTL mod?
