I'm pretty sure this is fairly common knowledge; I currently store all my rechargeable batteries that aren't in devices in my freezer. How common is this practice / do you also do this?

I would think it's common knowledge also but you'd be surprised how many people dont know. There's a lot of good reading at batteryuniversity, thanks for sharing

Wait what, you freeze your batteries?

"Store them in the freezer" The chemicals in batteries don't freeze at typical refrigerator/freezer temperatures; but it does slow down the decay of the chemicals extending the life of the battery.

I knew that storing at low temperature will extent the charge. But I keep all my batteries at room temperature in a case. Charging them back to 100% is a small effort with the high-current chargers.

Another information about the Li-ion batteries is that they will decay in years even if they aren't used. The composition inside the cell won't hold for decades.

(((F R E E Z E R))) that seems a little extreme you sure it's good to freeze them, that just doesn't seem right, seems like molecular bonds could be broken, I don't know as I have never tried this.

I do keep all my primary cells in the refrigerator and pretty much always have but never in the freezer...

@ Blord

The chart in the article covers battery decay, the percentages are recoverable capacity.

@ Flaminpyro

I've seen other graphs and studies on this and it is safe to keep the batteries in the freezer. It will extend the charge and recoverable capacity more so than a refrigerator.

It's a trade-off between extending the life of the cell, and the cost and inconvenience of storing them there. Drawer is fine by me.

They actually say this below the graph.. "[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Avoid freezing. Batteries freeze more easily if in discharged state."

so basically just put them in the refrigerator :D

okay people, forget about what you read on the internet use your own knowledge of chemistry, batteries have acid, ionic bridge and etc, basically.. acid being cooled down to sub-zero temperatures will basically be "freezing in time" yes it will save your batteries for longer, you can keep them in the freezer just for storage, however theres one problem, melting. When you take out cold batteries out they will start collecting moisture on them because of condensation and humid air, when u unfreeze them put them in the fridge for a day, then take them out of the fridge and put them in a plastic bag thats sealed so that outside air doesnt cause condensation, once they are room temperature shove them in the laser.

honestly you could experiment by putting them inside ur laser right away and closing the lid since most of your lasers are air sealed it shouldnt condensate inside..

and finally, why freezer? keeping them in fridge is enough, like old ppl keep their medicine, freezing is a little extreme and hard to maintain

Keeping them in a baggie in the freezer and moving them straight to the laser solves the condensation issue.

Kinda like Cyparagon said,
Keeping them in a drawer is enough, but for those of us who feel like it's worth it, keep them in the freezer or fridge and hold onto some charge to get a bit more runtime.

yeah props to Cyparagon then I didnt read this thread lol.. but yes you are right who cares about batteries as much, the temperatures on the table are unreal unless you live in the desert in a trailer and are trying to synthesize meth, keeping in airconditioned room is enough
