Hey -
I think you're underestimating the discharge of those blue 10440s from DX by quite a bit.
I'll do a quick test an get back to you with some photos / results.

That would be very appreciated, rhd. I've read that on a site somewhere (I think DrJones is the owner, DX Forum handle) that the discharge is 700mA. I've bought these because they are tested in a very good 'actual capacity'.

Ok - so I may not be properly testing current, but this seemed like a logical approach. I connected the battery to 3 diodes worth of my test load, with a 1 ohm resistor.

If the resistors are freaking you out -
That's 6x parallel 3 ohm 2W resistors, which creates a 0.5 ohm 12W resistor. Then that's duplicated again, in series with the first one, to bring the resistance up to 1 ohm.

Anyway, no material difference between the 4x 10440s I tested. At least 1200 mA on all of them. Was that a flawed method of testing current though?

No, that's fine. Thanks but, unfortunatly, 0.1v can change the whole result. Can you measure the dropout of the three diodes and the dropout of the three diodes + resistor pls?
thanks!

edit: where you got that third hand?

No problem. Can you clarify for me -

Basically wire it up the same way, but then voltage meter with the probes parallel to the 3 diodes, and again parallel to the diodes + resistor. ??

Got it at The Source

Strange readings -

With 3 diodes and the "1 ohm" resistor (and fresh batteries this time) I measured:

1600 mA

The measurement when parallel with the diode segment was: 2.8 V
The measurement when parallel with the diode + resistor segment was: 1.2 V

Ok, thanks rhd. I made a mistake there.. sorry..
you need to measure with the dmm (volt) in series with the three diodes and the battery.. you should get a value like 3v. Then you should do the same, but the three diodes with the 1r resistor and you should get a value like 1v. Thanks anyways.

btw where you got that third hand?

Lol, not your fault - I have no excuse for ignorance of proper metering procedure.

I got the third hand from The Source (former Radio Shack - in Canada)

It's about the only thing I've ever encountered that was cheaper in "mall-retail" than online. I think it was about $12, which pretty much pars any online source I had seen.

I bet it's the exact same product actually - I think the reason you can't find it super cheap on Chinese gadget sites, is the shipping weight. I know it's "free shipping", but that just means they factor it into the selling price. This thing is fairly heavy.

My gear is all packed up for the night, or I'd give it another shot. I'm excited to see what you find out though, once yours arrived!

You're right. I'd prefer DX with a paid shipping, than you would pay only 1 shipping ($3) and many $8 third hands, thats where they make their money , and we lose ours ;)

as you said they are good, I'll order they.. really need some help and I don't have goggles for two people, sometimes my mom got scared to help me you know

news: I test drived the diode with a 11 ohm resistor (I think.. brown brown gold gold :p). Cannot test with a load, someone screwed up my multimeter :(... the reddie has a visible beam indoors lol. The resistor is 1/8w and it heats up a lot @ 4.2v, I'm assuming the laser is outputting >200mW. Wtf? The batteries haven't had the internal resistance tested... 18650 for testing, I'll use the 10440 when they arrive.

Is that a freak diode? it burns somehow well (VERY SIMILAR than my rayfoss 225mW tested) and heats very little. Nothing like a greenie etc, like a 100mW laser. Unfortunately I don't know from where the diode were extracted. It is from Rayfoss, came new (not a 'extracted' unit), with 1cm pins...
and thats with 11r res, assuming 350mA (or 380mA, depends on batteries questionable quality)
