I have a shoddy 100mw 405nm from Amazon(I bought it for the price like an idiot). It was focusable, so I used it to burn "If found, return to Hell" into my copy of The Great Gatsby that we were reading in junior English last year. Now it won't even smoke a sharpied match head.
In respect to the 405nm wavelength, at what powers should it:
-smoke a black piece of paper
-pop black balloon
-pop regular balloon
-hurt my skin
-burn unbleached novel paper
:)

So it still is Focusable, I'm afraid it is way below 100mW , more like <30mW infact

Does that mean it previously DID burn anything

Have you changed the batteries in between these uses?...

The battery may just be dead/dying.

-yes, it did burn things before. hardcore
-It burned things running on 3.0v, and it's made to run 3.7v. I bought 3.7v batteries just for it, and it just doesn't do anything interesting anymore

Try cleaning all the contact points with a pencil eraser first.

Then check that the batteries are good, and fully charged.

Then check if the lens is clean.

If everything checks out fine your laser is probably dying the slow death of an over powered diodes. You can tell by defocusing the laser and looking at the spot. If it has some large dark spots in it, its toast.
