I've historically been resistant to "reverse polarity protection" in my builds and drivers. In fact, on occasion I've even come off a little intense on the subject - perhaps even a bit stubborn, with comments like "I don't have any trouble following battery directions, why would anyone else?". I just plainly have never really understood why people would put batteries in backwards.

But - Pretty much everyone disagrees with me. The community overwhelmingly prefers polarity protection.

So, alas, I caved. However, if I was going to bow to peer pressure, I decided that I wasn't content to just adopt the status quo. I wanted to take it a step further, and put something extra cool into these drivers. This is something unique that I haven't seen before. Check out the video below. Screw polarity "protection" ;)

That's what I call doin' it right.
Would that be a simple full wave bridge rectifier on those inputs by chance ?

How is this happening ?

Jim

A combination of new driver design, and different built approach, and magic. Aaaaah, don't quiz me on it. Let me keep the magic alive :)

I said no quizzing. ;p

But nope.

Diodes.
Arranged in some form of magical bridge arrangement :)
Or some other magical form of semi conductor junction.

Oooooooooooo.....
Magic ?!
I should have known.
But in my own defense, I haven't been around here a lot lately and your build competence had slipped my mind.

I stand, or rather sit, corrected.

:p

That's awesome!

I love the grainy 'underground anarchist' look to the video too, just adds to the 'magic' in the air.

If it is made with diodes, he would have 2 diodes dropping voltage. Even with schottkys this would mean 0.8V lost, with normal diodes even 1.4V+. At 1.8 Amps thats a lot of power just for polarity protection...

There are other little mechanical tricks or circuits to get a result like that, but I don't get any idea which would work with normal unmodified batteries as well as fit a laser host...
