L1117 in Direct TV Box

I haven't made an L1117 driver yet, but I plan on trying sometime soon. Anyway, I was taking apart a Direct TV box today, and discovered a single L1117 near the card slot. If you have a scrap box lying around, and you didn't want to pay shipping on one item, you may be in luck lol. Always good to find things you may need in scrap electronics

Indeed, I've found a nifty 5V voltage regulator in a printer once, 2A current handling, with a very simple to use on/off pin. Used it in some LED project.

I find nifty things all the time in old electronics, then again it depends on what you use electronics for that makes some things useful and some not. If one is into robotics you can find all sorts of nifty sensors chips and things of the sort.

There is plenty of usable stuff in many electronic products, but often its not really worth harvesting. Broken devices are especially tricky since -something- caused it to malfunction in the first place, and that could exactly be the thing you are planning to re-use.

Before i could order things like transistors cheaply online i used to yank one out of an old radio or something once in a while, better than driving to some electronics store, wasting gas and paying premium prices on top ;p

I'm thoroughly disgusted with Radioshack's pricing lol. I go there for soldering irons and solder, and that's about it. I just like keeping the random parts in the hope that they will have a use, assuming they work You could run into some trouble if you're 100% sure that broken part is not the cause of your issues

Careful, it might be a fixed voltage LM1117 ... if it is you cant really use it in a constant current circuit.

Oh glad you said something I had no idea there was a fixed version. Either way, once I can get toner to transfer, I'll end up buying some anyway.
