Highest suggested output for diodes?

I recently purchased some 650nm diodes rated for 5mW and a 532nm diode rated for 50mW and I was wondering what the maximum 'safe' output I could push on each of these diodes. Any and all feedback is welcome and appreciated.

The 5mW red should probably be left where it is, but maybe you can push it to 10mW if you really want. It's kind of underwhelming though. The green should not be pot-modded, because it's probably already near its limits already and it rarely makes much difference anyway in terms of brightness.

Some folk are routinely pushing a single mode 50mw PL520 laser diode to 75-80mw output without much problem, I believe, I've pushed a bit harder without a problem.
