I'm planning to design my own laser driver, and will keep it open source.

I'm soliciting opinions. What I see here is a buck-boost driver capable of 3A/5.5V, 96% max efficiency, internal soft-start, and a typical app external component count of 10.
I also happen to know that the M140 drinks/drops max 2A/3.6V (PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong, as always) which would make this IC a good foundation for the design.
Only issue I see so far is price - they start at over $5 ea.

I've been talking to Ben about making and selling these boost minis. I'm shooting for an assembled resell price at or under 10.
Depending on cost of parts and if I can get them assembled by a company, might get lower...

Only way you'll get that kind of value for money is if you do at least a thousand at a time.
And the ben-boost mini can't handle an M140(?)

something to consider.. a company I've worked with before would be able to provide assembled boards at a reasonable cost. If you provide a BOM with digi-key part #'s they'll source the components, saves you having to physically send them anything.
The guy who runs the NA division owes me a bit of a favor, might be able to get free shipping out of him. If you want, pack up the gerbers and BOM and upload, I'll ask him for a quote.

Been looking at the ben-boost -- the LM3410 is a fantastic choice, and Element14 currently has LM3410's on sale for $1.50 @ Qty 1000. Digi-key's current price is $1.59 @ Qty 3000. That's a good deal!

Sourced out the parts and got the price of the driver to a very reasonable price. Ordered 500 boards tonight as well as a stencil for solder paste.
I plan to be more lenient with the output ranges this time as well, I'm going to shoot for 25mA increments in the output choices. After 1A it will probably go up to 100mA increments though.
Pricing will be about ~$10 retail for the assembled drivers. May do a pre-sale type of thing at an even lower price ($6 or $7?) To help pay for the total order.
We'll see how it all unfolds. I'm going to wait until the boards are closer to being here before I decide on any of that.

Does not the LM3410 have 2.8A typical switch current? That's what the datasheet says. In your original post you talk about doubling up to get 2A, however the LM3410 should be able to do it with a single unit.
