Congrats on your scope Tom,

Post some results when you are able to,

I wish your scope a very long and good service to you and possibly to someone who needs your help :D

Wow, you make it sound like a rite of passage. Do I need to give a speech? :D

So far I tried sticking my probe in the headphone jack of my iphone while playing blink182. I need to do some more reading I think.

What do you expect ? You really want to see a video clip on the screen of the oscilloscope ? :D

A LOT more reading. I suggest you start with a copy of Rolling Stone, then SPIN, Blender, and NME. Hopefully that will fix the major issue ;p

You guys are funny. So Blord, you are saying it won't show the video. Probably some MTV DRM thing! I was hoping to at least see a cool eq/windows media player type graphic with peaks on the bass drum beats or something. Of course I forgot to even activate the headphone jack so that was a problem as well...

:D

You need to be careful though Tom.

I accidentally killed one of my channels on my iPhone a while ago while scoping the output. I seemed to have shorted one of the channels out, and thus it blew out.

It's still under warrenty so I got a new one. Just take heed and make sure nothing touches in naughty ways :eg:

I think that I'll quit that then. I buy my phones outright because I have a work arrangement for free cell service. So I don't want to trash a phone that will cost me ~$600 to replace... Although I have been wanting to move from 4 to 4S? :eg:

Thanks for the advice!

Ok, interesting update. I pulled out one of my Mohrenberg Benboosts labeled 537mA.

I put it on the Jufran test load and set my DC power supply to 8.1 volts. I checked it with my multimeter and it said I was getting 8.21 volts.

I set the test load to 6 diodes based on this post under the assumption that I would be powering a 12x diode with the driver.

I then hooked the power supply to the driver and the PSU immediately dropped from 8.1v indicated to about 6.4v indicated. Nothing I did (aka turning up the voltage) changed that number.

Then I put my voltmeter across the test load and got about 740mV, which was within 10% or so of the ~755mA the PSU said it was putting out. Odd!

At this point I was wondering if the set resistors were right.

Here is a crappy iPhone / aixiz acrylic macro shot,

You can see where I beat it up trying to measure the resistance with my multimeter.

Using my handy electronic toolbox app on iPad/iPhone, I checked the resistance assuming that those are 0.62Ω and 0.82Ω

Electronic Toolbox by tsteele93, on Flickr

So we get 0.3531Ω = .538A so they look to be correct.

That leads me to wonder why WAS (I ended up killing it physically, I tried reading the resistance with my meter and accidentally slipped and ended up cracking the inductor.) the Benboost apparently putting out ~750mA?

That alone could kill a 12x diode.

All of this assume that I was doing any of this correctly.

If I wasn't, then please help me out.

Also. I have asked this elsewhere, but how do I scope the output. I understand I cannot measure current with the oscilloscope, but I assume if I put it on a test load I should be able to measure voltage in a way that would show me current?

Thanks for any advice, thoughts or polite suggestions.

Are you saying your input to the driver was 8.1v? There's your problem!

Electronic toolbox is awesome btw.

This is a boost driver Tom,

why the input is 8.1V o_O :D it should be 4.2 or 3.6V or something like that :D in order to boost it to the 6V+ the 12x requires :D

EDIT: Firehost is giving me multiple errors, so I can't seem to post what I want to post. But what I was going to say, was that this is another example of people suggesting that there's something wrong with the driver, when really it's just really basic/fundamental user error. People need to stop blaming their equipment and components for everything.

Brainfart. Yes I know that. Yes I overlooked it. Thanks for reminding me. ;)

Sometimes I hate to even ask for help fearing that I will be pounced on for even the simplest mistake. Glad to see that is not the case. :)

I will give it another go at 4 volts.

I imagine that driver is damaged by now. You should at least swap the lm3410 chip first.
