Yeah, when I get new drivers, I'm going to do something similar.
I take it that it would be a bad bad thing to take the broken semiconductors off the board and solder across the connections?

Unless you're trying to kill your diode, I wouldn't.
If you want more benboosts let me know I still have a bunch, I'll ship you some bergquist thermal tape along with em if you want to try to use that to insulate from shorts. It's very very thin the 0.005 variety, but should still hold your caps just off the heatsink.

you could just try replaceing the exploded caps and see if that's all that was destroyed. I dont know this electronics all that well so I cant say for sure. But for the pennies it costs for caps it would be worth a try.

I was thinking about it. But I don't know of any local place that would carry the part. There is one store in mind, but it would be a toss-up. I also don't have a fine tip for my soldering iron, but this would be a good excuse to get one.

I'm sure someone has some caps arround that they might sell you. I would but my order isnt here yet I think I ordered an extra 10 anyway's if you dont find any here I'll send you the ones you need when I get them.

Better yet, what do you actually need? PM me your address and I can send you some. I have spares and I'll spring for the $0.43 or whatever a stamp goes for these days.

The exact parts that exploded were these:
PMEG1020EH,115 NXP Semiconductors | 568-4105-1-ND | DigiKey
On both boards, they became busted. One of them totally fried (could see the brown from the smoke on the semi-solid thermal paste I took off) and the other was pulled off the board when I pulled the thermal adhesive off.

It's actually a good deal from CajunLasers... he has a quantity that he is holding for sale for an extended period of time and he has to pay for labor, parts, etc. The fact that he will replace any defective ones also is worth something.

Well, considering you can put in the PF code (PF10) on his site and get 10% off everything... and that he is the only supplier of most things (such as BenBoosts - Mohgasm and Modwerx closed, the ONLY supplier of the BlitzBuck), it's actually a pretty good store. I've talked with Clif - he doesn't make nearly as much profit as you think. And the only reason he makes profit is because he buys in bulk.
And how is $16 a rip off? Moh was selling them for $13... that's only $3 more, and that's because Moh was the direct manufacturer that he could sell them that low. When you buy 100+ of a driver, you better expect some returns, especially when you have to handle all of the flops.
