I've been looking for a cheap power supply because I don't have one yet and came across this. Variable to 15V and 5A. Seems really cheap and I don't want to buy something that will fall apart quick. I also don't want to spend 100s on one. Should I go with this one?eBay

That's still within my price range. Does it come with the Ac power cord and +/- leads?

No idea, I haven't bought one myself (yet). I was looking at it since I only have one variable supply at the moment.

I skimmed the description and didn't see it. Perhaps ask the seller?

Also, with most cheap power supply the +/- leads they provide you with have a high resistance and can only be used for low currents.

Almost all the chinese leads I've come across are >30awg garbage. Damn things start smoking if you send 5A through them, not to mention the voltage drop along the line is unacceptable.

I recommend making your own. Get some alligator clips and banana plugs, then get some lamp cord and cut to whatever length you want. Solder it together. It ends up being the same price as a chinese set, and it can carry 10 times the current.

Speedy, which PSU did you chose? How have you been using it?

I just picked up THIS ONE and it's waiting in my apt. office. I'm so excited to start using it.

The mastech 18v3a its enough for normal diodes. Not my ccp or f mount sadly.

I'm afraid I don't understand what those are, but do tell. I'm just now upping my game with the PSU and looking forward to learning more.

Conduction cooled package. Its a 20W 808nm diode aray. The other is a smaller one up to 10W. Both pump sources really.

I need close to 10 amp for the f mount and 25 ish for the ccp. All that at 2 volts...

It is definitely doable for under $50 or so. There are several methods, but I'm fond of the DIY approach;

1) You could find a hefty filament ("heater") transformer for vacuum tubes rated for the current you need, full-wave rectify and filter the output, and then make an array of paralleled voltage regulators (with current sharing resistors!) to step down the voltage to where you need. At 10A you could use 11x LM317's with heatsinks if you had to.

2) Find a MOT with intact filament winding, check the voltage it is outputting (some are only a couple volts AC, which is perfect) and if it is at least 1.414 x the voltage you need then you are in business! Simply rectify and filter the filament output, and regulate via whatever means of your choice. Just be careful with the secondary output, it is lethal. The filament windings are good for well over 15A of current without voltage droop.

3) Find a mot with a good primary, and then cut away all the other windings. Wind your own secondary as a step down, of just a few turns. Experiment to find the closest voltage to 1.414 x what you need, and be sure to use heavy cable. Rectify, filter, and current regulate. A MOT set up like this can easily supply 300A at 5V.

Or you could look for commerical high current power supplies, like the ones Ham Radios use, and then regulate the current/voltage down to what you need. This is what I do with my 25A 13.8V PSU.

Yeah you are pretty much speaking a foreign language haha. If I had something variable from 0A to 25A with a signal wire I could throw the read out of current to a display it would be perfect. But I would have to pay someone to do that because I have no idea when things get that in depth.
