Default Driving a High Power (500mW - 1500mW) 980nm Laser Diode

Hi everyone,
I am new here and am learning about laser diodes and more specifically driving them.
I am researching for a project where I want to drive a high power laser diode. I am sourcing one each of the following power outputs: 500mW, 1000mW, 1500mW.

Looking over the datasheet of my 1000mW laser of interest gives me the following values:

Reverse Voltage: 2.0V
Threshold Current: 0.4A (MAX 0.6A)
Operating Current: 1.3A (MAX 1.5A)
Operating Voltage: 1.6V (MAX 2.0V)

For my initial testing purposes (to figure out which power laser is ideal for my project) I was planning on just using a LM317 CC supply.
Once that's sorted out I plan to use a more efficient CC supply, as the LM317 would waste a lot of power in the form of heat.

I want to be able to drive the laser diode from a battery (possibly Li-Ion, so that it can be recharged).

In the case of using a 3.7V Li-Ion I believe I would require a Buck Converter to get my required 1.6V @1.3A.

Do different wavelength laser diodes require different types of supplies, or is it just a case of supplying the correct voltage and current?
