Cree driver from DX - any good?

Yello,
Talking about this: 2.7V~6V 3W Cree Circuit Board for Flashlights (15mm*2.7mm) - Free Shipping - DealExtreme

I saw some users here use it for their high power lasers, they just changed the resistor to fit the power they need. It's also really, really small and will probably fit in the small hosts zone (like the SS 18650 and maybe even SS CR2)
and the best thing: it's 2.30$ free shipping.

DTR told me it doesn't protect the LD from battery voltage spikes, but I think just adding a small capacitor to the driver will solve the problem.

Anyone here have the driver? What do you think about it?

Looking to operate the A140 at 1A with it for now, maybe later at 1.5A by changing the resistor.

:thanks:

Why do you think it's unsuitable? The laser diode needs constant 1A, the driver supplys constant 1A.

The driver is based on AMC7135 regulators. It works only if the Vf diode is lower than the battery voltage.
The Vf of the blue diode is higher than 3.7-4V and you can't use two 3.7V cell with this driver. The spec reads max 6V.

Sooo if I want to power my laser with 1x18650 batt I need a boost drive?
which boost drive do you reccomend me, that is very small to fit the SS CR2 host, and have good heat dispution? I'v heard the Benboost heats up terribly..

Almost all drivers need a heatsink if you set the current at 1.5A. Not just the Benboost
driver. Look at the driver section and read the threads about the boost drivers.

:thanks: sorry for asking stupid questions without searching first.
What do you think about the Micro boost drive V1?

Thanks, but 2 things:
1. It's fairly large, not sure it'll fit in hosts like the SS CR2
2. What if I want less than 1.5A? Something like 1.2A will be wonderful, you think I can change one of the resistors there?

Did you open up the SS CR2 host ? You can measure things you know :)
I don't know if it can set lower than 1.5A. Ask the vendor ?

Ask laserluke about his ims pcb boost, that one supposed to have great heatsinking capacity. also new benboost should be available for your diy needs soon.

It's really really large. If I needed a driver for any size I would make my own and use other bigger batterys, but sense I want to get everything in a nice little host like C6 or SS 18650 or maybe even SS CR2, I need tiny boost drivers.

Thanks!
