Ive stumbled across a circuit simulator while on my quest to understand how to build a dang driver.

(I would just ask "Help me build X to power X at X" but I dont want to look like someone who doesn't search :) )

But yeah.

Im just fiddling around with adding componants of different values..and it simulates the result. you can insert a current source..pop in some resistors..capaciters...pots...and check out the resulting values and change values for componants.


Only bad thing is it doesn't seem to have regulators..anywhere..

But I thought this might be useful to some of you which is why I wanted to post its own thread. While a good majority of you are skilled enough to figure things out, componants cost money! :) and so does trial and error.

This applet is indeed quite nice. If you want to get a better understanding of, lets say linear drivers then try to create an op-amp current source with it. It is a nice exercise and the results are quite ok for such a simple applet.
If you want something more elaborate, then take a look at LTSpice. It has a lot of regulator ICs that come with it. Only downside, it is from Linear Technology, so the choice in the integrated circuits is more or less restricted to their products. Give it a try, I like it.

Very cool. I tried playing with it a bit last night, but yeah. No regulators. :( Pretty neat to see how everything works together though. I'ma check out LTSpice too.

I use a program called National Instruments Multisim 11

here's a quick test load, driver and battery i whipped up for a IR driver i was building.

Arg! LTSpice doesn't list any voltage regulators like the LM317 in their program.

I use a program called National Instruments Multisim 11

here's a quick test load, driver and battery i whipped up for a IR driver i was building.

There's a free limited trial version of National Instruments Multisim 11 that I can try.

I simulator for free damnit! :D

Not true. There is a bunch of regulators available in LTSpice. I have recently used the LT3083 for a lab power supply and it worked nicely. There are even buck and boost drivers that come with LTSpice.

Yeah, I saw some of those on there. I'm not really familar with them as the LM317 is the only one I've really worked with so far for building laser drivers. Ok, I'll try goofing around with a few of the others.

Try the LT1085. It is 100% pin compatible to the LM317 and has a lower drop out voltage. If you like it compare the data sheets. But, I would not use the LM317 anyway. There are far better ICs out there...
