OK, so im making an LED hula hoop for my gf for her birthday. I thought about implementing in some lasers coming out the side, basically I want to do is this.

The stars are just laser diodes that I plan on getting, is that all i need besides of course a switch and power supply?

Thanks for any help :)

Stick to LEDs. That could be pretty cool, use pulsed or RGB ones, and make a video of it in use in the dark because that would look amazing.

But leave the lasers out.

She has a regular led hoop. This is for a video/photo shoot. I'm wanting to do both led and lasers in a single hoop. With a switch for each strand of lights.

I'm sorry... seriously?

That didn't strike you as an incredibly unwise thing to do?

I do not think that is a very wise idea to put laser's to a hula hoop

You thought you can cause damage to the eyes of anyone who is around

I know what you wanted to do, and we're all telling you it's a stupid idea.

Lasers are dangerous for your eyes. Sending laser beams flying around the room is, i repeat, a stupid idea.

(besides, you clearly haven't done NEARLY enough reading to be building this)

Stick to LEDs in hula-hoops and lasers in pointers. It makes a mess the other way around.

If they are laser, went on to say that not a good idea, by definition a hula hoop turns and swings in all directions, endangering anyone near him.

You can get a good effect with a high-power LED, also is much safer and easier to make, you'll also find LED's in many different colors.

You can do it... but use <5mW Lasers that you buy at the
$$$ Store if you are going to put it on a randomly pointing
Hula-Hoop...

I think I can see what you are trying to do...you are trying to get a bright enough cleanly project line of light from the spinning hoop. That could make for a pretty wild picture BUT, as the others here are pointing out, the safety factor is a big concern.
If you stick to the cheap laser pointers that you get for a buck to keep the potential for injury to a minimum you will probably find that those same lasers don't really show too well on a moving hoop even with a smoky room. And to keep them all working reliably under those conditions would be a real challenge.
I would suggest that you look into super bright LEDs. (The kind that come looking clear.)
I have a LED/fibre-optic Christmas tree with these things and in a slightly smoky room they project fairly small clearly defined beams of light.
They will be nearly indestrucable, run safely from a minimum of battery power, and cost very little. (I bought some myself from "superbrightLEDs-dot-com".)
I could post a picture of my tree to show you if you want.

Hope this helps.

Sorry but Personally would not let my child play with several laser attached to a hula hoop, but it is my opinion, and each person can have their own opinion.

Mostly if these laser are purchased anywhere, because no guarantee of its power, I have one of those $$$ store-bought that you say, and with your LPM gives me 9MW, and that is totally unacceptable for a child to play with, especially if there are several laser.

Alternatively, if it's purely for photo and video you could grab yourself some goggles for the relevant colour, but that's going to make recording pretty tough.

I'm glad to see that you are using your LaserBee LPM...

As to children... I didn't read anywhere on this thread that a
child will be using this hula hoop...
It was meant to be filmed... "Its for a video/photo shoot"

IIRC... the LPF TOU states that you must be 18 years of age
to become a member on LPF...

I wouldn't let a child play with a high output LED...

BTW I just tested fourteen(14) Dollar store red Lasers (the ones
that use 3 hearing aid button cell) and not one was over 3mW...

Of course I use it, and it works great ;)

Perhaps I associate hula-hoop to a children, sorry, but equally I do not feel very good idea, unless everything is very controlled.

Also to make a video or photos must have people to do this, and if for whatever reason buy a laser's like mine and have no goggles, can be dangerous for your eyes, (because I have not read who want to buy ones), but as I said is only my opinion.

High output LED (not talking about LED of several watts, obviously), well, but I think a laser under the same conditions is much more dangerous because the beam is very much concentrated.

Maybe I was very lucky, my laser also works with button cell, and was bought in a store of $1 or similar.

Lasers, on a toy, for a kid??? LED's are awesome, but lasers are not toys. Stick to LEDs imo
