What make and model DVD burner was it? Try and find the manufacturer to get an idea of the ampage of the diode.

If i remember well it was a Pioneer 16x
I've used that same style of driver with a red laser diode out of an LPC-815 sled. Be sure to isolate the battery from the laser diode case, AND the host - if the host is electrically connected to the laser diode case like most are. The case pin is negative on most of those red DVD burner diodes. That driver was really designed to be used with neutral case or positive case 808nm IR laser diodes like those used in most 532nm DPSS pointers. I had to use mine in a host that isolated the laser diode module from the host body. As for current, I set mine to 200mA for longevity.

Edit: Don't forget to jumper the TTL pad to the VCC pad in order to enable the driver, unless you are actually planning to use the TTL control seperately.
