Hi

Looking for a 17mm driver to run a 500mw 980nm 9mm diode, battery will be 1x 18650, there are loads on DX,FT but unsure which to try. Had a few from a UK company Odicforce and tested on cheap 500mw 808nm diode but not much luck as the diodes lasted a matter of seconds :cryyy:. I will be trying to solder the diode case+ to the neg on the driver as to make the brass host a full hestsink, so battery will go in neg first pozi to tailcap. Hope some of this makes sense as it don't me:thinking: below is one i have at the mo 500mw 850nm. Sorry for pictures being so big.

This is the diode i will be using with luck.

Hoping to build a illuminater, i have one using the pill in the pictures which is 500mw 850nm. What i am working on is a 980nm 500mw, but struggling with finding a 17mm driver board that runs without poping the test diodes that i am using (808nm 500mw) 2x blown awaiting more stock. Done a dummie run checked for V and A seems ok yet on wiring i am blowing the diode's ?. Diode is case+ left pin neg, so if i solder the case pin to the neg from the D-board and neg Ld to pozi brass housing becomes ground, run battery neg first as case is also then ground. Diodes light up for about 1.5 seconds then die?. Going to try wiring pozi to pozi and neg to neg on driver board and insulate the diode from the case and see what happens when i have more stock of diodes. This may make sense then again it may not?

easiest solution.... +of diode to + of driver: - of diode to - of driver.

-use thermal adhesive that is not electrically conductive to isolate diode case..... and everything should work... where you get your diode from?

-for 17mm contact board contact flaminpyro...

contact DTR for a buck driver....

Ye that is how the 850nm diode is soldered, but they have problems with heat, would be better to run with the brass as heat-sink but then again it may never happen. Diode is from a company called Laserlands: A Laser Producer and Seller don't know how good or bad they are it was the only place i could find 980nm 500mw diodes. My test diodes are from Odicforce 808nm 500mw but he is out of stock as i keep blowing them lol.

lol.... so have you blown the 980nm yet? DTR have the right driver for you.... most mass produced chineese driver are for leds but they claim it for laser as well... follows my instruction and everything should go well.

No not had the B*lls to build the 980 yet lol, got a few 980 200mw off them also for test loads but they have yet the land. Thanks for the help Isaac i will be following your instructions in great detail on my next batch of diodes, will also look into DTR.

no problem.... while you're at it grab some focus lens from DTR laser shop and goggles from survival laser as well.... as a famous saying go protect your seeing balls..

Hi,
Kempton tape to isolate the diode, it's thin and easy to work with

Ok with any diode you can't wire the driver to the diode with the + to the - and the - to the +, this will blow any diode, and with an IR or a red diode it should blow them instantly. You always connect the driver + to diode + and - to -, no exceptions.

What you do is use a separate driver and battery contact board, then you can reverse the connection from the contact board to the driver. When doing this you must also be careful what driver you are using, if the driver is continuous ground then it's possible to accidently bypass the driver and connect the battery directly to the diode, and again you blow the diode. If you are using just a round driver that doubles as a contact board then with a case positive diode it will have to be isolated from the host.

Cheers for the replies lads, think i will wire it as above and fill in with thermal paste, just need the stock of diodes now lol. Got the googles Eagle pair think they are called came from Odicforce.

Well the 808nm 300mw landed today so set about building with above wiring, and it works and stays on:thanks: big thankyou to you guys. Used one of the 350ma boards from DX bottom in picture, the other board is a 700ma, not the best solder job but it's only a tester. Got afew 850 500mw diode coming tomorrow so will have a go at these also, think i may need to run with the 700ma board, but will set-up a dummy run first. Then if all happy i shall set about using the 980nm 500mw diode i have.

Congrats on getting it up and running. Confused as to what you are using it for.

Using it as a IR Illuminater, sits on top of my nv scope there is a 50mm lens that screws onto the T20 torch body works very well.

Following on with this build how would be the best way to heat-sink the diode, as most ir diodes are case pozi? at the mo i have just used some non conductive thermal paste. Laser stays on and don't seem to be getting hot well it's only on for about 60 secs at a time, any ideas greatly welcomed.
