Doesn't seem ideal, though those problems would not be that big an issue for a wall mounted system.

I suppose NIR led's are just more practical for most purposes, but the concept that common solar panels could be used to produce a decent amount of 1100 nm light is interesting.

I can help... send me a PM with your email and I'll scan you some schematics for a 20A current limiting PSU with a low output impedance that uses low cost parts. You'll just need a BIG heatsink for the grounded emitter, series regulator, using paralleled transistors...

I know how to do it... Been doing that at 250 volts and 35 amps in Ion Laser power supplies for years...
