Something not powered by batteries for a change:

CFL_vs_induction.jpg

An induction lamp next to a CFL of equal power (40W).

Induction lamps are like fluorescent lamps except the mercury is excited by induction. You can think of it as a transformer with that ring being the "primary winding" and the mercury in the glass as the secondary. They are almost as efficient as modern LEDs (70lm/W wall-plug efficiency on this one), and have a lifetime even greater (this one is 60,000 hours).

The large size and the mogul base means you can't use it just anywhere, but it was a nice addition to the collection.

erns, which one of those two seems to have the nicer beam? side-by side comparison beamshot in the works?

jufran, maglight now makes a maglight LED light that isn't just the maglight with the maglight luxeon drop-in, not to mention newer, "fancier" models

Ah yes I'm aware of that. I had both versions myself before modding them into SST-90s :yh:.

XP-E > Luxeon in my opinion.

EDIT: Reminds me these are on sale now!! Time to buy some more Mags :san:

Both beams look pretty much identical. The beam tints are almost the same. Brightness looks close to each other.
