Hey LPF, thought I'd take a side project from lasers for a bit and put together a flashlight. Nothing difficult, just an empty host and a drop in module :)

Anyway here are the specs before the pictures.

Host: Ultrafire WF-501B Empty Host Ultrafire Flashlight Aluminum Alloy Casing/Shell/Housing with Strap - Black - Free Shipping - DealExtreme
LED Module: XML-T6 Drop-In rated at 1000 Lumens
Power Source: 2x RCR123a 3.2V Li-ion Batteries
Estimated Lumens: 300-400 Lumens

All in all (excluding batteries) this cost me about $22 to build. The batteries are something like $3 for 2 I think.

What's really cool was the drop in came with both smooth AND textured reflectors!

Anyway on to the pictures!

All in all I'm really happy with this build. I know it wasn't tough at all and in no way a true DIY as
all I did was literally drop in the module. But I like it, and for the money, its not too bad!

And these aren't flashlight related but I thought they were kinda neat. Bamboo keychains. A lot
of people have said these die real quick, but I know how these work and all you need to do is inject
water into gel to keep them alive for quite a while!

That XM-L looks very offcenter and in need of an insulating spacer between the reflector and LED. Just an observation from what I can see in the picture. Other than that looks like a fun pocket rocket :p

I recommend using aluminum foil or a copper sleeve around the drop-in though, to help the heat dissapation.

Yeah they are pretty off center, but I'm not too picky on that. Thanks for the tip, I was wondering about heat dissipation on this thing!

The WF-501B is a nice host but the drop-in module will overheat very fast with XM-L or P7 led. At high temperature the led will not survive long and the light output is dropped very much. I would recommend the C2 host. The heatsink is directly screw into the host and has excellent thermal capability.

I bought this flashlight at Black Friday ( 50% off ), UltraFire WF-501B SSC-P7-CSXO 3-Mode 900-Lumen Memory LED Flashlight with Strap (1*18650/1*17670) - Free Shipping - DealExtreme
I remove the P7 led and build it into the C2 host, Ultrafire C2 DIY Cree LED Flashlight Shell/Casing Complete Set with Driver Pill (1*18650/2*CR123A) - Free Shipping - DealExtreme
The P7 is direct driven by a 18650 battery.

The empty WF-501B is gonna be a new laser :D

I've always loved the C2 host, they're pretty nice. I just threw this together for the fun of it, since I've sort of neglected my flashlight passion fora long time!

Radiant has heatsinks for the 501b, FYI :san:

Hosts & Heatsinks

sha-pow!

Do you mind posting wall shots of the flashlight beam? I know it will be off-center, but I still want to see it. I've been contemplating buying this dropin.

Yeah I'll post beamshotd ASAP, but that won't be till few days after the new year.
I've seen those heatsinks, but I don't like the 501B as a laser host. Crenellations and laser hosts don't mix in my opiniOn

What? No beams yet.....

I added an aspherical lens and painted the reflector black on my XR-E R2 501b and turned it into a pretty impressive thrower for its size.

Considered replacing it with an XM-L T6 but I've read these cant throw as far as the R2.

I do have another 501b that I dont use on my rifle so might consider upgrading that after I compare it to your pics ;)
