Tight beam through HID projector housing

Hello all,

I have a pretty simple question that I cannot for the life of me find an answer to. By removing any shielding (high beam cutoff) and adjusting the depth of the HID lamp in the housing can you focus the light into a tight beam for long throw? I've had good success with big traditional reflectors but they have so much leaking flood that they take away from the beam pattern. This flood is perfect for a spotlight application but not so much for effect lighting.

Thanks all

The reflector and light shield create an "image" that is projected/focused onto the road by the lens. To make a beam you can use either the reflector or the lens, but not both. I'm not sure if the reflector is hyperbolic though, so that's a maybe. Any convex lens with any point light source will create a beam if the light source is in the lens' focal point, but of course, most of the light isn't emitted in the direction of the lens, in the case of an HID lamp.

tl;dr: yes, but it's impractical/inefficient. A different/larger reflector would work better.

I believe the reflector is ellipsoidal. Thank you very much for the information. I will continue with the large reflectors unless someone has another suggestion.

I'm afraid it's not that easy. I've been working with HID projector optics for years and the entire purpose of the design is to evenly spread the light over a wide area.

Assuming you're looking for automotive use, the smallest (projector sized) option I've worked with is the Hella Micro DE Xenon. They aren't cheap, but have incredible throw for their size.
