Hi All,

:eg:Very Small Pocket Rocket Red Phlatlight LED Flashlight Build.:eg:

This is Just a Cool Factor Build. My Real Red Phlatlight build is still in the works and gathering parts still so stay tuned for that.:eg:

I wanted to have a Small Phlatlight Build. Possible the Smallest so far.

So i decided on Using the Black C3 Host.

This Flashlight was designed for a "WOW HOW COOL" Factor rather then a "let me see what kind of run time i can get out of it".

This is a Direct Drive Build Using 1x 3.7v "Full charged really 4.2v" 14500 cell As well as i have an Extension Tube for the C3 host and i can also use 2x AA 1.5v cells.

With the 14500 in i get from a Cold Start ~1 minute 20 seconds ON and if i put it in the Freezer for about five minutes i can get ~3 minutes of ON time before it needs cooling.

With the 2X 1.5v AA batteries the Light can pretty much run for a wail. It does get Warm after ~3 minutes but its not anywhere near shut it off.:D Batteries dont last long though.

I find the Duty cycles are enough for the WOW Factor and iam Happy with it.

One thing i do not know how to do and i dont know what to even search for is How do i test how much currant is going to the LED. I see People testing it with the light assemble but How to test it i dont know. If anyone can let me know what to search for would be much appreciated. Iam dieing to see what this guy is Running at.

Other then That Iam Very Impressed how Bright it is. I have powered the Red Phlatlight LED at full power and some at 9.3A and man is is Killer Bright.:gun:

Here are a bunch of Pictures and videos of the Build.

Final Thoughts:

Its Exactly what i wanted. A show off Pocket Rocket Flashlight using the Red Phatlight.

It Really blows me away of the Brightness of it out of this Little Light.

Not that much ON time before it gets hot but iam OK with that. You get about 6 - 8 Full Power Blast at 1 minute each before the cell needs charging again.

Hope to get a little more power out of it with my IMR AW 14500 cell when it comes in.:)

I cant wait to finish my other Phatlight Flashlight build now.:eg:

:thanks: For Looking.!!!

Keep on Lazing...

I mean Keep on Flightlighting.....

Love it!

And I'm assuming you need to measure the current with the multimeter leads in between the led + and the battery + but that's only what I would try, doesn't mean I'm saying it's right :p

Thanks.

I tried Setting it on the 10A setting and tried to measure it but is saying 6A+ and there is No way a 14500 is running this thing at 6A+.

Is there another way to do it.?

To measure currents that high you'd need a crazy testload

I think you measure the current at the tailcap

Can those IMR cells even handle 9 amps of current draw?

Awesome build as always ;) Now, put a convex lens in front of it and burn stuff :eg:

IOU some rep!

Thanks.

Yes I tried measuring it at the tail cap but it was not with the IMR cell. Its not here yet.:p

I know there is No way its driving at 6A+ So i think there is something wrong with my testing.

Is there another way of testing it.?

I tested it on a testload before i hooked up the LED using 3 Diodes and it was doing ~2A.

But i feel its doing more then that.

Test with the meter at 10A. Since you are direct-driving, all current through the cell is equal to current through the LED, so yes, just measure at the tailcap. This goes for linear drivers as well.

6A is very possible. If you could fit 18650s, an imr18650 would be safer. The typical maximum safe discharge current of 14500 is ~1.5A, and for an AW IMR14500 ~5A. For 18650 2600mAh, max. safe currents would be ~5.8A for 18650 and 16A for an AW IMR18650.

Still, for short bursts, quite impressive eh?

No No Heatsink other then the Pill.:D

it gets Hot Quick. But i built this for burst and wow factor. Its pretty crazy outside.

I've got mine in another cree host and i filled the entire pill with a heatsink and mine still get hot almost instantly.
These phlatlights are really awesome.

Good Idea.

I was going to put a aluminum disk that i cut off a rode but i dont know if iam going to keep this build in here so i dint want to make it so i cant use the pill again if i take it apart.

My other build is going to be Much better for cooling.:eg:

I love the color. When i take my dog out at night i see myself grabbing for this light rather then a standard Cree white LED flashlight.

My favorite is when you point it into the trees. You can see so much better with this light then a white LED. It almost seems that it makes everything glow and come alive.:D
