Hehe, did have a look at it thru some red goggles and there is a bit of blue there indeed.

Gonna go do an outdoor video in a bit, but here are some pics:

Reflector seems to be working quite well:

Nice Build there things , looks like it should be on the side of a building someplace :D , I have put my 180W sox to the side atm as i have othere projectes going , as soon as its going ill get running pictures .

i wonderd though do you think mirrored acrylic would work as a reflector as im hoping to put my 18W Sox in a little acrylic housing .

55W and lower must be run base-up ±110°. Above 55W must be run horizontal ±20°.

The arc starts at the base of the electrodes because that is initially the path of least resistance. As the cathodes heat up, they switch to hot-cathode mode and the current will emerge from the tip instead.

Interesting, no blackness around your cathodes. That is a cute little tube! :)

Such an awesome gold colour.

IIRC the black coating is a Barium based getter for absorbing electrode sputter.

Very impressive Things!
I took some shots of the Sodium lamps at work- they are much more monochromatic than the ones in my street so I think they are SOX. I might grab a little one and start out small :) - although I'm currently looking at some neon discharge tubes on Flea-Bay..

2nd one looks more like HPS, though could just be the camera.

Could be fun to get one of the tiny 18W ones and underpower it so it doesn't really heat up, then you could use it as a funky conversation piece :)

Have finally screwed my box together, polished the reflector to an almost mirror-like shine, and box is sanded and prepped for painting tomorrow :)

Cool on your light box :)
Yes I'm not sure about these, I have seen some smaller low pressure tubes around. Took it with the iphone which has very bad colour rendition as you can see from the cream wall turning blue as the camera tries to white balance.

Been looking at some of the Geissler tubes & small tubes with neon & other noble gasses.

If the colour in your first pic is right, then that is definitely a LPS lamp, however HPS lamps also have a pretty distinct orange colour, but not nearly as distinct as LPS.

Look at it through a diffraction grating. I keep one in my wallet

I found another light source that has a similar spectrum:

It's a pickle! :na: Not very efficient though.

And running:

Reflector is shiny enough now to actually see a reflection of the bulb in it.

Full brightness with forced flash:

@Things: Awesome polishing job! I drove past your general area today on the way to Mt Baranduda, I was keeping a look out for a yellow sodium glow, I would imagine it would stand out!

Hehe, drive past after dark and you'd probably notice it :D

Need to find a job if I keep buying random stuff like this :p ... Need one anyway, but this was worth it :D

Made an animated gif of the startup, images every 3s. It's quite a large file so give it some time to load.:
