Little 70W LED run

I had this little LED a while ago, and desided to post some pics of it.
Right now I have the LED in storage and the driver dismantled (designing a new PCB) and am working on the host for this LED.

This will be portable, but the style of the host is still up for debate as I try to allow it to have enough mass to heatsink, be small and compact, and also hold a power source (either 4X 32650s, or 2X SLA (6V @ 12A/H) in series).

So far im quite satisfied with this LED's brightness, and it is alot easier for me to drive it compared to its 100W brother.

The old setup, just a crude way of testing it, the heatsink isn't enough for good runtimes, but its okay for 20 seconds or so.

LED alone, no additional optics. This thing is quite bright and will be exelent as a flood light.. but Ill try to get *some* throw out of it.


Im still debating what to use for this LED once its in a host... just a reflector, or an aspheric lens.

oh man that thing is one monster of an led, what are the dimensions of the emitter?

This thing has 70 emitters on one die. The die is 2.2CM X 2.2CM, and each emitter is roughly 1mm X 1mm.

The whole LED itself, 5.6CM X 4CM (not including the contacts).

From a 1/4" away from the LED (this will probably work better with an aspheric or something).. but even without a lens, it will smoke up and melt black plastic and foam.

Haven't tried yet, but I think it won't have an issue to pop a black ballon.

Ive compared it to a 500W Halogen in my backyard, and it comes very close to its brightness, however only using 70Ws to achive that. Im quite happy with this LED.

With that shape, there is not too much that you can do, with reflectors ..... there are this and this that can help in "recovering" to front some of the side emissions, but for get a "thrower" type focusing, you probably can use just a spherical lens ..... maybe some old diapositive projector lens ..... anyway, it must be large enough for "collect" the maximum light from the chip, when the chip is few millimeters less far than the focusing spot (placing it exactly in the focusing distance, you will probably get the image of the chip projected on the target) ..... a lens large, say, 10 cm, and with a focus at 4 or 5 cm can be a good one for start some experiments

Or, as alternative, if you can find a spherical mirror, large, say, 20 or 25 cm or similar, with a focus of 10 or 15 cm or so, you can try to build a backreflector thrower (how do you call those projectors with the lamp in reverse ? ..... recoil projectors ?)

Yeah.. I didn't run it for more then a second or two without a sink.. gets hot.
With a 4D mag... I might have a chance to machine a heatsink that will give me at least 30 seconds... (bieng generous here aren't I?)

You can also try to find a lens like this one (or similar, depend from the diameter of the holder), and place it in place of the glass, in front of the led ..... not specifically made for this, but may also worth the trial

EDIT: also, with all that space, you can probably build a fan-cooled heatsink ..... need to punch some holes in the side of the host, so may end not too much elegant, but can be done
