I put a 100W HID kit in a Cyclops Thor Colossus spotlight. The spotlight has a HUGE reflector but I'm not getting the throw I want. I've tried adjusting the bulb in and out but can't find the sweet spot. I have noticed that the beam has a bit of a focal point. If the light is focused inward to create this focal point does that mean the bulb is too deep or not sticking out far enough in the reflector? I've looked online but can not find information about this when a reflector is involved.

Thanks in advance. When its done I will post pics!

Usually focusing works by either moving the bulb further into the reflector and the reverse, or by moving the reflector in relation to the globe. Either the globe is in the wrong position within the reflector, or the reflector itself may not be suitable for the results you want.
Just my opinion, I am in NO way a flashlight expert and only have a basic understanding of them :p

Yeah I get that and I've tried several depths but with its large spot size and since it requires dissambly to adjust its not as straightforward as a laser. Its also the wrong bulb because the h4 100W hid bulbs are 4 times as expensive has the h1 bulbs. My retrofit works but I don't know if its too deep or not deep enough. I would assume with a spotlight reflector its easy to tell if you have a focal point. For instance with a laser and lens if you have a focal point it means the lens is too far from the emitter.

I just want to know if I am seeing a focal point should I fudge it closer to or further from the bottom of the reflector.

It needs to be further back.

You sir are correct! I actually drew it out on paper and then it became obvious. Thanks for the reply.

Beam is all focused and beautiful. Not as tight as I hoped but the hid spills a lot out the front where as the halogen is dipped to block that light.

Overall I'm very happy. Ive never seen so much light! ...but I have to build two. So now that I have a plan I will document the other build for you guys.

Here's a teaser comparing the 100w HID Thor to the 130 Halogen Thor

This is with my short exposure phone camera so its much brighter in person!

Another way to think, is like a laser. If you see a "waist" in your beam, that's like the focal spot. To bring it closer, unscrew outwards the lens/optic/reflector.

Yeah, people sometimes forget about HIDs midst all the LEDs. I've got a few old D2S from my headlights, reckon I might try to find a cheap china ballast to run it offa and drop it in a light. Hmm, satellite dish?
