Not sure by smaller but more intense, yes. Hotter, Yes! Potential explosion, maybe. Hot glass isn't fun to have in your eye. ;) Also, be aware of the color shift when the lamp is overdriven.

Like many other things, if you start out with a quality bulb, you may be able to get away with overdriving it higher than with a no-name china bulb.

GE, Philips, Osram, and Koito are some well trusted manufacturers of automotive 35W HID capsules, last I checked, which was quite some time ago. I always stuck with Philips 85122.

I have the osram in my car retrofit and tested the 55W ballast on it. The light is noticably brighter but yellower. Went back to 35W since I don't want to blow the bulbs. They are pricey :)
