Default What's The Concensus On Driving An M140 445nm At 1.8A?

Yeah or ney? I read most of the stuff I could find and I have three of them running at 1.62A, but without much time on them. One of them LPM's at 1.95W peak, haven't yet metered the other two. Need to juice the batteries and see if I can get that one above 2.0W.

Considering pushing one to 1.8A. Anybody doing this with success and longevity?

Thanks.

Glenn

DTR recommends 1.8A max from what I've seen. I'd trust him on that.

It would be his diode that I would push that hard.

Thanks.

Remember that 1.8A is >8.1W (>~6W after useful energy removed), so plan accordingly when considering heatsinking and/or active cooling. 6J/sec of heat is no joke!

Would a copper diode and a copper sink be enough for decent duty cycles?

Thanks.

I had a normal laser earlier running at 1.8A, with an ordinary heatsink (aluminium) and the duty cycle on it was 25 secs on, 40 secs off. Don't know if that helps a lot but yeah

I run an M140 at 1.8A in a C6 with an aluminum heatsink. Runs like a champ, but it does get warm. Definitely have to use a duty cycle.

Yes. I recommend a copper module and/or heat sink for the longest duty cycle, in our case 1 minute on, 2 minutes off.

I have not seen any long term failures yet. It appears that if the diode can't take the current, it will fail pretty quickly.

If your diode can't take the heat, you will know.

It'll degrade after weeks of use, if it starts degrading turn the current down

Is it safe to say that 1.62 is good? Is there really anyway to tell without having a LPM?

Most, but not all of the 445nm diodes can take 1.62A. There are no guarantees.
