Default Re: weird "square" over beam of arctic

If you're using the "clear" "full power" lens cap -- either rotate it till it goes away, or remove it immediately.

What you're seeing is an inter-reflection of the beam itself bouncing off of the laser die, and then back out the aperture.
For this very reason, I knocked the glass out of the "Full power" lens on my Arctic. It'll cause back reflections, heat the die, and possibly kill your diode.

Rotating the "full power" end cap will likely get rid of the 'square' but i'd recommend getting rid of the glass in the lens or using it without the cap alltogether.

Let me know if that fixes it?

If you take your battery out and remover the back end cap and hold the laser up to your ear and check if you hear the lens shacking/rattling at all. It will be easier for you to hear if you also remove the High power lens off as it could muffle the sound.

Iam thinking you have a loose lense. Or some how the internal lens got dirty.

I have seen similar phenomenon in one A140 diode used in my friend's DIY laser once.

It's nothing to be concerned about , most likely an inner imperfection of the emitter dye. As far as I can see, it's actually there on all blue diodes, however it's more expressed/visible one some, less on another.

You obviousy have never owned WL Lens pen, have you?

It's actually exeptionally good, I have tried it out myself, ask anybody who got one with their Arctic. Don't speak against products you don't know, OK?

Besides what does that have to do with anything?

yeah you have no idea what you are talking about, i have owned lasers for years and built my own, the lasers that WL sells are very good quality, dont be all upset and pissy because you didnt get one or they messed up your order. if you owned one or held it in your hand you would understand.

Wait a minute, Jaylang . He's talking about the Lens pen, the cleaning accessory for lenses which you get with an Arctic.

Not the actual laser in pen-style host.

At least, from what I've figured. Since "Arctic" itself being longer than three 18650 cells stacked together, and wider than 3cm in average, hardy qualifies as a pen.

no loose lenses here but thank you for the help, if i can get in touch with WL (fingers crossed) maybe they can send me a new one because its still under warranty. unless anyone has any other ideas. i dont use it for burning anyway so the dot isnt that important to me. i bought it for the beam and the power, i am still very impressed. heh and trust me if i wasnt impressed i would say so.

i apologize then, i've herd it called everything from "laser pointer" to "laser pen". so i just assumed he was talking about the laser. but as for the lens pen i have used one.. they are ok.. but there are many other ways you can clean the lenses safely.

First of all, use "EDIT" button in your posts.

Second, you should take the glass piece from 100% power lens, leave the low power lens as it is.

Just take a sharp blade, and cut into white glue. It's really soft and will cut easily. Cut it all around, then simply push the lens out of the cap.

It's really simple. I can take photo if you want.

does it look like this?:

I think that is because the diode is square and some light is reflecting off it:

Default Re: weird "square" over beam of arctic

This is simply your lens focusing the spurious emission from around the edge of the die. We have seen this since the release of the 6X 405nm diodes. These 445nm diodes are built the same way. The front of the die in the diode is rectangular, but the main beam only emits from the center of one spot, on the edge of, the die.

With the "better" (higher output) lenses this "phantom square" is more easily seen, but it is always there. Yours looks like a better lens. There is nothing wrong with this output. If it bothers you, get a lower quality lens. It will reduce both the mW and the brightness of this "phantom square."

Peace,
dave
