I have been putting this off for a while now...

And its starting to bother me...

I have a 445 build. And I love it.... Its a small build running at 400mA which I have heard can give an output power of around 250-350mW. Its a good pocket sized laser....

But I can't stop thinking about how much brighter a 1W 445 would be....

I am a beam guy. I do casually burn stuff... but mostly I just love the beams. The brighter the better.

How much brighter would the beam of a 1W-1.5W be compared to a 300mW? Is the difference worth putting the money into a higher powered build?

For some of you, this might be an obvious answer. But again, the only 445nm that I have seen IN PERSON is my 350mW'ish

Thanks

I still haven't gotten a 445, but my 400mw o-like 432 is AMAZING.

I had an arctic (they're around 800mW) and also made my own pocket build set to 750mA (should be around 600mA).
You could tell that one is brighter if compared side by side... but despite the 33% advantage the arctic really wasn't much brighter.

I agree that a 1W+ beam/dot would probbably be about 2X as bright 250mW.
But it will burn ALOT better.

So in other words.... its worth it

It sounds like Im gonna be on the market pretty soon for some parts to make myself a 1W+ now...

Woohoo

Thanks guys

From left to right
Arctic 758mW , Cree 18650 stainless steel 1167mW , Sacredfire 2050mW

Dont know how much you can tell but when you see me facing the dots you can get a better idea.

But i will tell you there is a Difference between my Arctic and my Stainless steel build and the 2 Watt just blows them out of the water hand down.

Hope this Helps.:)

put in some (very little) smoke and the difference will be more noticiable.
with 2W of 445 you can even light up black paper (like printed newspaper). With 1W I cannot made it.

maybe the beam get more dense (not 'transparent' but a 'opaque' beam) at higher powers, I'm not sure.

If you're really into beams, and the beams quality you should keep it low. At low powers the divergence gets much better, nearing Tem00 (doesnt ever quite get there).

But you really should think about making a high power, it's a experience like no other.

I have 3 445 and the 2 that are driven ta 1A provide a beam that is noticable brighter than my pen laser. I'd go for it

I've been driving my 445 with anything from 120ma up to 1900ma.
Below 240ma it is more like a faint LED, it doesn't even lase.
At lasing threshold, you can find a single mode operation in which only the biggest
of the bar right in the center lights up.
As you increase current, more and more bars light up, and they emit more strongly as well.
Around 300ma, the beam is pretty dim, even in the dark.
Around 600ma, it becomes rather noticeable, but nothing compared to the beam
when being driven at around 1200ma.
Above that current, I can hardly notice much of an increase in brightness anymore, but
of course it burns more violently.:D

You must be doing it wrong then.;)

weird there is not much difference in the 3 of them

It must be my Camera not able to see the difference that well. The Room was so bright with blue that i guess it dint pick up that well.

But their is a difference between all of them.

Even my arctic witch is 758mW to my 1167mW laser that ~400mW difference in power.

Going from 300mW to 1W is going to be a Big Difference.

hxdrummerxc I also say go for it, you will be Happy.:)

Here is a better Picture i took:

The 758mW Arctic is all the way to the left, then a Green Laser , then My 1167mW Cree SS. I hope this is more helpful to see the difference between 2 laser 400mW in power difference at least.
