Star Trek Assault Phaser 1.4W 445nm

Hello Everyone. I just wanted to post my NEW Laser: The Star Trek Assault Phaser Modified with a 445nm 1.4Watt laser powered by a Flexdrive v5 set to 1.5Amps firing thru an Aixiz 405/445 glass lens. This is by far the most fun i've ever had with a laser. Here are some pics::drool:

Great build, is there a heatsink in there ???

Star Trek Phasers can disintegrate an object in a fraction of a second and you worry about a heatsink ?

Thanks guys. I will post a video as soon as I am able. I am borrowing a digital cam from a friend. I got the host from Ebay. It is the Playmates version circa 1997. The Assault Phaser used a removable Power clip and was actually inspired by today's firearms. The idea for it was thought up by William Shatner for the movie Star Trek V which he directed. Considered by many to be the most desired version, admittedly it is not as futureristic looking as the classic phaser, it does feel cool when you push the clip in!
Yes, there are two heat sinks. I uzilized an Aluminum finned block heatsink for the Flexdrive mounted with thermal adhesive. The other is a rather unique idea I came up with. I drilled out the Fake emitter to hold the Aixiz module. Then I used heavy copper foil and rolled it using the outside of the housing. I pre-cut the pieces to fit inside the back part of the housing and inserted multiple layers and used adhesive on one corner to keep them together. This creates an air space between them and with the top of the module screwed on, it touches and draws the heat away. It works suprisingly well. Short duty cycles help, but I have used it for burning without any problems.

Looks AWESOME!! Does it run on 2 AAA batteries? If so I doubt you're getting 1.4 watts out of it....maybe I am wrong. Have you tested the output.

No. It uses 2 AA. I am currently using Energizer E2 Ultimate Lithiums. They are rated at 2amps cw. and up to 3amps for 2 second bursts with an 8 second rest. I have calculated the amp draw on this at around 2.3 amps with the sound board. I do not have a meter, but I know it's getting what it needs. I just went thru my 1st set of batteries which only lasted about an hour or so of actual on time before I started to notice the beam not being quite as bright. Then the sound began to crackle. Changed the batteries, and back to being super bright again. I am planing to switch over to the new IMR AW 14500 high output rechargeables in parrellel at 3.7v at a combined 1200mah with a max output of 5amps. - Thanks.

Ok, I reworked the phaser to work with the AW IMR 14500's in parelell and WOW! What a difference. These babies put out some serious power.The beam is MUCH brighter now. I have been testing it's burning ability before and after and now it burns at a distance where as before it would not. I can't believe how awesome this is now. I wish I had a digital camcorder. I only have video on my cell phone which isn't very high res. I'm trying to get a friend of mine to loan me his High-Def Cannon.

It would be great to see what your output is now. Higher than 1.4W I bet.

UPDATE: I've finished upgrading The Assault Phaser and I am proud to announce that it is now a Dual Flexdrive 445nm Laser running at 1825mA putting out about 1.7Watts with fully functioning sound & Blue LED effects. The New AW IMR14500's made this possible. This thing is incredibly bright! and it burns like crazy too! Here are a few beam shots. These do not do it justice.

LKY2009, I am so impressed with this laser!!! It is beyond cool for me as I am a major geek. It is a dream to own a phaser that can make sound and burn at a distance (really). Could you provide a complete parts list and may be some tutorials? Sorry to be a pest, but I think I just found my next laser project!

Thanks alot. I would love to do a tutorial, but I don't want to disassemble the laser now as it was difficult to get the dual Flexdrives to fit without VERY careful precision. However, I would be glad to tell you what parts I used and where and how to install everything. I understand the feeling you have of wanting a Phaser as I had wanted to be able to do this since I was a kid watching Star Trek re-runs on TV. It is such an AWESOME feeling when you point and fire and see the Beam and hear the sound effects. Burning a hole in a CD case or cutting thru wooden match sticks is really Fun.
