Default Really inefficient M140, then M140 is kill

Hey there. I decided to put together a 2W laser since I had never witnessed 2W before. I got a C6 host with a copper heatsink and 1.86A driver from Survival Laser and an M140 from DTR. Spent a couple hours putting it together. I turned it on and I didn't notice it being much brighter than my 1150mw Osram PLT450B C6 (from across the house). The neat thing about it was that this M140 appeared much bluer than the Osram 450nm PLT450B; what I can show you is subjectively what I witnessed as (R,G,B):
the Osram LD being (80,0,255) and the M140 being (0,70,255). Keep in mind, that this is not science and I'm not saying that the Osram is 426nm, it's just how it appears to me compared to the M140: Wavelength RGB Calculator. In this image, the Osram is on the left and the M140 on the right. The M140 appears to have a much rounder beam shape than the Osram. That's just how they are. These are their beams expanded by their lenses, not raw outputs.

So I metered it at about 1300mW. Now, that's through a DTR 3 element glass lens. Baffled, I removed the lens to go ahead and meter it directly from the diode and pffffft *fart noise* oh nos! It LED'd and I got kinda sad :c

Specifics
1: I'll admit I was using a brass collimator module instead of copper. Assuming copper's thermal conductivity k is 401W/m*k and k(brass)=109W/m*k, and since the equation for 1-dimensional heat transfer is a function of (k)^1 [q=kAdT/dx], I will assume that the heat on the die was building up almost 4x as fast as if I were using a copper collimator module.
2: About 10 seconds into its runtime, the driver started making a strange whining and clicking noise, then it stopped making noise, and then the LD died.

Prognosis: I cooked it up real good.

But still, this was an incredibly inefficient M140. From DTR's power tests, I should have been getting at least 1950mW=2300mW-(2300mW*0.15) accounting for losses in the 3-element lens. Assuming the same forward voltage as DTR's M140, my LD was only 19% efficient where it should have been 28% efficient, and was producing 6.9 watts of heat instead of the ideal 5.9 watts of heat. I guess I just got the one sadly flawed LD out of the bunch of them. And it really wasn't an accidental mixup; here's the mark signifying a genuine M140:

Just overall some interesting stuff that I found fascinating.

If you had whining it is very possible you had some issue in the driver or with the batteries which could be why when it was running you were getting low output. Whining usually indicates the driver is having a current supply issue. Also are you sure the diode is dead? You might just have a dead driver or you could have both a dead driver and diode based on what you were describing. I would independently test each item to see what is what. Do you have a test load and another good driver?

When an X-drive is destroyed by reverse polarity or excessive voltage the chip fries and it will put a very small amount of current to the diode driving it under lasing threshold which looks just like it is LED but when the driver is replaced the diode is fine. You can also remove the module from the heatsink and if it heats up quickly but is still producing very little then it is LED but if it does not produce much heat it could just not be getting much power.

I think it is hard to assume what was going on but whining would seem to indicate battery, connection, wires or driver as an issue.

With a three element lens these are usually 1.6W-1.8W. Keep in mind you loose at least 25% of the power with a three element lens. It would be extremely rare to get to 2W with a three element lens. With a G-2 yea usually they are around 2.2W-2.4W.

Yeah, I hope you can test the diode and driver and you didn't already chuck them. A 3amp test load is pretty inexpensive and you can even buy it cheaper as a fun little kit. I've blown a couple diodes and boards but don't ever remember hearing any noise.

Hmmm I've got some 3A diodes. I'll test it later. Thank you for all that info DTR, and I had never considered it could still be alive.
Additional info: I've built 2 700mW Oclaro C6's on 1.25A drivers from SL, and both of them made whining sounds after turning them on, just like charging up the flash on a disposable camera. Similar to this M140, but not spastic

Set up a 250mA LM317, and yep it's officially dead.

Gentlemen, I present to you, A MONUMENT TO THE AGES!

I measured the current and voltage given by the driver from 5 and 6 3A diodes (both close to dropping 4.6v) since I assumed an M140 would need 4.6v at the assumed amperage since I don't really have a 'laser' diode anymore. Then I did a linear interpolaiton to find the driver current

I don't really have an oscilloscope at home, but just in my own interest, I drove 2x 3-watt wLEDs in parallel for 5 minutes straight taped to an aluminum block. The 16340s actually got hot before the driver and LEDs did.

Idk, maybe the driver spikes when the LD gets too hot. There will be many more lasers in the future, and future generations will laugh and play and sing olde songs of yore.

My PL TB450 only lases at 300mA. If still possible, test it with more current.
