Osram PLTB450 1.4W 450nm Diodes

The new PLTB450 diodes are now in stock. This thread can serve as a place for testing and discussion.

Here are some of my observations so far.

Here is a comparison. Paced out 30 feet so it could be off by a foot or two either way. Measured the line with my calipers.

Ok here are some power measurements with a G-2. These were done without a lot of cool down time so there may be a little higher peaks for the higher currents with active cooling.

The raw output pic sure is interesting, its quite a narrow band of light
 
I'm missing the purpose of this diode? Seems like it's worse than an M140?
 
I though the same thing at first but the beam does look a tad tighter when focused with a lens and if you can see in the first picture the line is about the same length if not a little shorter than the M-series diodes. They certainly are not as powerful as the M-series diodes.

I am not sure if it will prove to be correct and only testing could tell but it has been suggested to me that the tighter stacking of the lines on the Osram may be advantageous to in trying to correct the beam with correction optics.


Here is what I am seeing. I noted the focused line is vertical with the shorter aixiz of the raw output not the long when focused. I would think this is actually more desirable.

Interesting DTR, did these come out of a projector or off the shelf?
 
No projector on these yet. They are sourced from the manufacturer.:)

Do you think the 1.6W versions will be the same beam specs as the M140, the slow axiz will be fatter as they will use a bigger emitter to get the power up?

Also have you put one on the spectrometer? running hot these could make up to 460nm?

Don't know until we see them. I don't have a spectrometer but they look pretty much the same as the M140's to my eyes.:)

The beam size would probably make these easier to combine too. I think this would be an advantage for prisms correction. The angle of the prisms wouldn't have to be as much, and I found when testing with prisms that the greater than angle, the bigger the power loss.

I'll have to get one of these for my corrected handheld build idea when I have the coin :)
 
Here is a better shot. The M140 was metered @ 2.2W and the PLTB450 is only being driven @ 1A(only driver I had below 1.4A) and measured about 1050mW so that is why it seems fainter.

I grabbed one...

DTR's diodes have allway's worked great for me the ones I have killed have been my fault..
 
Though I would share. Built myself a nice little Powerlight unit with one of these diodes and a 1.1A ATMA driver using a three element lens. Does 880mW. I have to say they definitely have a much tighter beam than the M140's. The color difference is not great but you can notice it when they are side by side. I am fond of smaller builds and I will say this is my new unit of choice for daily use.

If you are not after the most powerful unit out there these definitely have some appeal.:D

Nice I like the b50 hosts too nice and small.. I havent built mine yet worked on the mits500 tonight will make a post on it soon.. Hope to build the PLTB450 in the next couple day's.
