The fan is not a bad idea but the size of them is quite big for 500 l/m your looking at the 48mm/60mm that's a prety big fan for a handheld. Love the new hardware! I havent worked with tec much so I cant say really I have a few but never tried them out.

The optical combiner diameter is 55mm, so the fan is adeguate... we are effectively talking about a monster :)
I have also asked to lazeerer the results of the tests he has done with 9mm diodes at temperatures near the zero... it's very interesting... he says that below that point he has observed no further increase in the optical power

I still think we can use a smaller fan cooling the tec. If your going to use a fan anyway's it midaswell be cooling the tec that cools everything else. This is kind of like my water cooled laser design. which is a waste of time now for a handheld Unless I want an aluminum back pack with wings.. Giving up Run time for cold is a good Idea and still keep it in a smaller package.

Well, i think the fan is adequate, more akin to a turbine with 40db lol, but this build seems to be overkill in every aspect.
You could slap a TEC as others have suggested, which would shave off more degrees.

Congratulations for an ongoing epic build. :beer:

The diodes should be fine for heat lets keep our drivers cool..

Maybe you are right... but we have not yet complete informations about all the aspects of a project like this to say that your solution is the better...
We must start from the following points:
- the diode produces more power at lower temperatures and lazeerer has found that below a given temperature there is no further benefit. He has not tested the efficiency of the diode but only the output power at a given fixed current. We need more testing to obtain optical efficiency curves (optical power / supply power ratio ie Pout/Vf*Id versus temperature);
- with the curves we can try to estimate the cooling power we need to maximize the optical efficiency and evaluate the tec solution versus the fan solution;
- at a given obtainable output power, the total supply power we need and, with the power source we have, the obtainable run time, would help us to choose the solution

The plexiglass optical frame is a very flexible tool because it is usable for several projects. As an example, if we use three rgb diodes modules (three holes in the same heatsink) with two stacked frames (same screws and a circular rotation of 90° of the second frame) and dichros instead of pbs cubes we obtain a multicolor laser with the same mechanics. This universal kit could be used for several types of handheld

For this handheld i have used my insulated metal substrate driver with an exceptional thermal efficiency... this driver absolutely no needs further cooling over that provided by the battery holder. The heat problem is only with laser diodes

I ripped my 9mm diode out of the aurara we will see if there is some sort of truth to the 3W diode. If I dont get close I will buy another for a 3rd perspective. I still cant get 2W out of one yet. and I tested on the laserbee and the ophir with g2 and the origional lense in custom barrel. I would not disregard the tec. It will keep things smaller. Do you have a host in mind for this whole design or is that all going to be custom too?

Also who has the optics for this build I would like to be ahead of the game by buying optics I can afford it now.

Jordan what else am I missin? does this diode have to be case isolated? maybe I killed em with case- neg I keep reading and it sounds great but I think I am still missing something

Here is the new heatsink i'm evaluating to improve the diodes cooling (diameter 70mm, lenght 50mm, weight 362gr).
I'm trying to avoid the use of a head cap thus leaving the optical frame opened.
