Default Re: OMFG A 6W 445nm module for $23,500!?!?!?!!?

this ebay ad has been up for about a year at this price, and the price was reasonable. They aren't using the 1W diodes, they are using an array of 500mW diodes that have better beam specs.

Its probably only a matter of time till a memeber here makes something like that by combining the ouput of several diodes.

This is going to be using a TEC for cooling purposes. This ain't your average laser pointer!
This is what is known as an MDAM, Multidiode array module and these are commonly used in the semiconductor industry for curing of certain materials, epoxies...

If i am correct, you only have to worry about mode hoping in lasers that are
DPSS, the Artic from WL is a simple diode setup so there wont shouldn't any
moding hoping issuses to worry about.

Since they're lines, it's not too difficult to knife edge three and three to get (≡) and (lll) respectively, then send those two through a PBS to get something like an octothorpe (#) but with three instead of two bars in each dimension... dodecathorpe maybe? A 6-watt square.

Swisslas, that'd be why

Also, they may use more than 6 diodes, and use beam shapers to get a nice beam profile.

Speaking of "who need 6W" :

Who needs 1W pointers? You cant even watch the spot without getting blind. Price IS high, but I bet its a lot of work and all the optics for combining and beam-shaping...

Imagine you got 6 diodes (assuming the diodes ARE rated for 1W...keepin in mind, some dudes get 1.5 - 2.0W, so they have to be rated for 1W) and 6 prism-pairs, then combining itself. All parts are made with CNC machines I guess...

Default Re: OMFG A 6W 445nm module for $23,500!?!?!?!!?

If we want to combine two beams from two 445nm diodes then we can turn diodes in that position where fast axis from first diode is normal to fast axis of second diode.

That should look like this:

And if we have 6 beams to combine we can make beam shape that will pretty much look like TEM00 beam.

If we have more diodes then we don't have to correct beam, we can do it much cheaper...

That is just in theory, but I don't know how it looks in real life, I never tried that.

Yep. Just flip one diode 90 and thats it.
Combining 6 diodes is WAY more complicated. Trust me. Beamshaping as well.

Beam shape is 4x4mm...so I guess beam-shrinking is going on.

Because you can combine TWO diodes and get a cross-shaped-beam...but not 6 diodes...like I said: Way more complicated.

Default Re: OMFG A 6W 445nm module for $23,500!?!?!?!!?

It might -look like- a TEM00 beam with a round-ish shape and the most power density in the middle, but it wouldn't be one.

For starters, it wouldn't be coherent, since the 6 sources aren't phase-coupled in any way and could even have slightly different wavelengths - so it wouldn't be very monochromatic either.

Also, it would feature both horizontal and vertical polarization, also a-typical of lasers.

There issues are probably of no concern if you want to combine the power this way for a laser scanner or other lighting purposes... for that it would make a great build.

For laboratory/research/holography use it would be a totally different issue, and the $25k price tag would actually be very good if it was a true single mode laser at 5 or 6 watts... I am not sure what it is they are selling there on ebay though, the specs are puzzling:

Beam mode: TEM00
Beam divergence, full angle (mrad): ~1.2
Beam diameter, at aperture (mm): 4x4
Polarization ratio: >1:1

The beam diameter suggests the output is square so it cannot be TEM00, but the diameter and divergence seem too good to be possible for 6 projector diodes rigged in a # pattern. Yet the polarization is 1:1, so it does suggest PBS combination.

Yes, it's more complicated but it should look more like TEM00 than what we are able to do with only 2 diodes.

Depends....you can shape a beam and this would be a reason for a price like that. But would be way easier, to use another diode.

Someone has to ask I guess :-)
