Ill second Pman's no comment comment.

@DTR- it may be wise to not sell diodes with drivers soon- maybe sell diodes with leads and drivers with leads--makes it easy for anyone with a bit of common sense and a bit of research under their belt to make a laser, but harder for the "0 hour noobs" to make them.
Thought?

Hmmmm....It is not the " Noob " I worry about....It is the noob, with no conscience , no regard for harm to living creatures, no maturity, no empathy, no respect for life or property...The " Noob " as characterized in the movie..." A Clockwork Orange " me droogy !!

I am not too concerned about you, but I am very concerned about the future of our hobby and the high level of power now available... mixed with a low level of moral and ethical behavior of some humans !!! That...I assure you I am concerned about.

We are on the " Threshold of DEW "....GOD help us !!

Perhaps...we are just toooo quick to " Profile "....and judge "Noob = all the really bad things listed above"...Yes....true....But...you must have empathy and realize....we are very dedicated to our hobby !!! And...we do not want to loose our hobby.

I worry that the " Noob "...may have two (2) issues...

1) Lack of knowledge as to the dangers of a laser beam.

We...at least I... worry that the " Noob"....may just not realize....just what danger he is dealing with !!! All it takes is a microsecond to burn a hole in the centre of your optic nerve....a microsecond of ..... "oops " and you WILL have permanent damage !!! A microsecond... where the beam reflects of a surface in the room one is operating the laser...." Poooooof "... BIG PROBLEM !!!

2) A systemic absence of conscience , no regard for harm to living creatures, no maturity, no empathy, and no respect for life or property

Well....who knows where this " Profile "....lies.....COULD BE ANYWHERE....at any age level....at any level of technical ability !!! Could be a " Noob ".....we just worry....and rightfully so !!! Considering the times in which we live !!!!

As a group....we embrace ethical, safe and responsible mature behavior. We truly need it to keep our hobby alive !!!!!

I am sure there are many, many of us that are just sick in our gut,,,,everytime another news story pops up regarding " Laser attack on plane"
rears it's ugly head !!!....Just SICK !!!!!!

SOoooo...this passion for our hobby foundations our " hair-trigger " to profile !!! All the above is MY opinion....
Other members....join in !!! It is your hobby.....speak your thoughts !!!!

Anyone know where to get these small lenses? I can find some much larger ones on ebay, but not these tiny ones except perhaps this one, it's much larger but maybe this isn't too big to fasten at the front of this diode somehow?

Micro Lens Cylinder Lens Rod Lens UV Vis NIR 300 1550nm Laser Diode Lens | eBay

I was PM'ing planters about this a few days ago because it seemed off-topic to this thread, but it isn't any more.

Looking around online, would a small rod lens be appropriate here? Placed right in front of the diode, as a FAC at the point where the asymmetrical divergences yield a roughly circular spot?

@ CDBEAM777:

Dude, way to many capital letters and exclamation marks to stay credible. You're acting hysterical. My car is a way more potential hazard to other people then my lasers. I use my car every day surrounded by pedestrians, cyclists etc. no one seems threatened.
I think these days are awesome days for laser freaks like me. I received my NUBM44 from DTR 2 days ago.
And I can't wait for the next (more powerful) generation diodes

Having that said, This diode burns like hell, but has an infinity focus like a flashlight and that is my problem and frustration with this laser diode.
Is this what I want to get descent focus?
Anamorphic Prisms for Laser Beam Correction 445nm 635nm 642nm DPSS Laser Diode | eBay
Of course I could be wrong, but building those 2 little pieces of glass inside handheld seems doable.
Are there chinese sellers out there with a better price? Because I can't find them.
Maybe people who had success with FAC?
Decent focus is a problem with almost all new diodes. We need a solution ASAP

The prism pairs can suck down some power, also I don't think 5x will be enough, maybe 10x.
Personally I am leaning towards the FAC approach, it will give you options with the secondary lens and how wide of a beam you want to focus from.

WOW....WOW...and another capital WOW...I was unaware that the use of capital letters and exclamation marks cancelled the degree of credibility....Yes....too many capital letters....too many exclamation punctuations.... but....come on....this topic...if any topic warrants a passionate response.

Hysterical you say !!! BS....appropriate I say....These frikken @holes continue to threaten my hobby.....and they deserve a big fine and jail time.....And we do not deserve legislation to limit our hobby !!!

Where does it all end ????? A frozen turkey could be used as a lethal weapon....perhaps we should outlaw the " Butterball " turkey too !!!

Hmmm....New stupid bumper sticker...we just might see..." Outlaw the Butterball...and Prohibition for Photons !!! " Good grief !!

And yes....a car is a lethal weapon....but the issue is both portability and size...a car cannot fit in yer pocket !!! We cannot pass laws to command common sense !! But, I see " Storm clouds" on the horizon....another incident just reported on this AM of lasers used by a New York airport !!! WTF is wrong with you @holes...

AND...take the time to read the entire thread ( Post #197 and #199 )!!! You will see that there have been several solution offered to get a decent focus !! READ !!

This is not really off topic because I am thinking about these new diodes and their parent unit. I wonder if anyone has ever used the dmd chip with active cooling of course to concentrate the output of all the diodes to a variable point? Or a bunch of articulated lasers or gimbal mirrors, oh wait I did that with a bunch of red lasers long ago, but I wonder how far and how tight you could focus a whole diode block with the dmd chip?

It's not so much the capital letters but the boat load of quotation marks that are used inappropriately. Just pass over reading these post as I do . Yeah cars can be more dangerous than lasers and guns for example along with many other things are used everyday for the wrong purpose but they haven't been banned.

It's just his style don't be so critical man. If you do just pass over his post then your loss as Mr CD has a lot of knowledge and spends a lot of money and time to further our hobby, that alone should negate nitpicking his posting style openly on the forum.

Sorry for the slight derail folks.

This is the safety issue that worries me, does anyone remember this thread?
Ever set anything on fire... unintentionally?
Instead of continuing off topic here, I am posting there right now.

When discussing the worlds most powerful visible diode laser, safety is not off topic. It should not become the only topic, but it is pertinent.

The old argument about the risks posed by activities in everyday life is specious. With lasers, there are government departments that are set up to limit the use of lasers and the relatively small community of users is held to special standards. Think about the pre-printed laser warnings and classifications that manufacturers MUST place on their products. These are not required on cars, turkeys or even guns. I believe the laser pointed-at-aircraft incidents are less threatening than the media hypes them to be, but they are sensational, the sometimes apprehended perpetrators are really sketchy and so there is a growing opposition to the general public's access to lasers. This is threatening to the community of individual users. For the community to try to keep a lid on accidental or intentional misuse of these devices is reasonable.

Personally, the fact that beam correction techniques that can result in extremely low divergence will be bulky and more appropriate to table top or lab set ups is not such a bad thing. Similarly, multiple diode modules that generate 10's of watts will be in a box and sit on a table.

I know the title of this forum, but I suspect that for everyone here at some point, given enough power, a hand held laser that can project a burning beam hundreds of meters becomes more than exciting. It becomes threatening especially if the person wielding it is an unknown. For me, this point is close.

DMD chips aren't designed for analog adjustment of the mirrors, only PWM positioning of either "here" or "there". You can't use them as a lens... unless you designed your own ASIC to drive the chip, maybe.

All good points by many of you guys about safety. I sat down and took the time to read the last few pages of this thread. I can't add much more to the combined wisdom shown but I would like to say that we have to be rough on "newbs" because we don't know who they are and do not have any background information about them.

Lasers are amazing and extremely dangerous as already pointed out. General knowledge of safety isn't enough. You need to know about laser safety as it is very different. Anything really can be thought of as such. I support the treatment of new people to this hobby as inexperienced children because you have to until you learn who they are. In the process you can save many people from really bad accidents and being blinded permanently is not something I would wish on even your worst enemies.

We shouldn't try to stop the sales but we should at least stop showing newer people where to buy until we feel comfortable with disclosing that information.

As said before we want to preserve this hobby and the way the world works I would have no doubt that those butterball turkeys would absolutely be banned if enough people were committing crimes with them although it would be hilarious at the same time

So new folks please forgive the rudeness and accept our screening process. You'll learn a lot and you'll enjoy it.

May we use these diodes with much respect and responsibility.
