Default Re: New WL 445nm Spyder....irresponsible?

Lets see how much damage I can do with $200...

1) I can go buy a .22 riffle or high powered pellet riffle and snipe people from a distance and they have no clue where it is coming from.

2) I can go buy a bottle of antifreeze and go in to a building and set it on a radiator or some other heat source to boil it and kill everyone with chlorine gas. This is on the cheap, I would have enough money left over to go get a LIMO to take me home.

3) I could go buy 5 pounds of black powder and magnezium and build a bomb that could kill a large group of people.

4) I could go buy a $200 laser pointer and try to aim it from a great distance at peoples eye's one by one and the crowed would see exactly where the beam of light was coming from and come kick my ass. Or they might just turn around and sway back and forth a little and render my attack useless

Hmmmm... Seems to me like if you want to be a retard and use this as a weapon there are far cheaper and more effective ways to acheive your goals. And everyone is talking about how this is so dangerous because it can shine for such great distances. Yeah but the beam also gets larger and less effective over range and not to mention the curvature of the earth is eventually going to screw you when trying to hit ground targets. And oh yeah, they can trace the beam back to you

AFAIK the divergence of these diodes is horrible, which would make them much more ineffective that much faster. Even if you were to catch someone in the eye from close up, they likely would not go 100% blind.

You would be better off getting the 100lbs of ammonium nitrate you could afford, some diesel fuel, acetone, hydrogen peroxide, hydrochloric acid, containers and fuse for the $200. Oh, and a coffee grinder.

Might outdo that little blackpowder "poof".

Default Re: New WL 445nm Spyder....irresponsible?

Just my personal experience here, but 1watt of 445 is just insane when seen in person. I have owned and built a few red and bluray lasers BUT, I put together a 445nm that hits 1300mW and holds steady. Its in a flashlight housing and all I have to say is WOW!

I think the people that are taking this topic somewhat lightly should see this power and wavelength in person prior to commenting in this thread. I have already disassembled mine and will be dropping the current drastically to 285mA / 100mW or so.

There is no reason I should have 1300mW of such a visible color. Now to put such a weapon on the market for so cheap is just scary.

Im not taking either side here just calling as I have now seen it. When I first read that 1W 445's came about so cheap, I must say I loved the idea. But with all the incidents that occur relating to lasers and jeopardizing lives via aircraft and eventually cars getting hit from overpasses etc, im not so sure the WL 200$ 'giveaway' is such a good idea.

BTW, these lasers can be run at lower powers. If you want to make a pointer as low as 5mW there are a few things to keep in mind.

The threshold current is around 200mA, in my case 192mA. Now if you set you laser to put out 5mW it will do so, that is until it starts to warm up. The threshold current increases with heat so your laser will go from 5mW to 0mW in a minute or so depending on what type of heat sinking is being used.

A good workaround for this is to set the output to 10-20mW and clip the edges of the beam with a small hole for an aperture. This will bring you back down to the desired low mW for pointing use and at the same time clean up the flat beam a little.

You could also do this while running the laser at higher powers (within a reasonable output) and clean up the beam a bit.

In my case, I have no reason to walk out my house with 1.3W of 445, its just ridiculous. I know there are responsible people in this hobby, but there are also a group of idiots out there that have $200.00 and the IQ of a carrot.

Now, how hard is it to buy a diode, find a host, press a diode into a module, make a couple of solder connections, and basically max out any driver you can fit, to do what you did?

IT'S EASY

Take away the Spyder, and those carrot heads are going to finally learn how to solder.

I guess you could say that this forum is a weapon, too.

Default Re: New WL 445nm Spyder....irresponsible?

I would rather see some noob take his time and develop some respect for what is in his hands rather than the meathead portion of the populous being able to 'but it now' at such an encouraging price.

Im all for the hobby and responsible people possessing whatever they wish, as long as they know what they are dealing with.

Unfortunately there will be a number of WL customers who dont take things serious enough.

For those who come to this or any forum to learn how to "buy a diode, find a host, press a diode into a module, make a couple of solder connections" it will take time to get all the pieces and while they wait will most likely post about what they do not have yet. In that time frame there is a good chance that they will absorb some of the hazards involved and show more respect to the idea of handling such a device.

Like I said, im not taking sides, but the attention WL is getting with these will put tougher restrictions on the hobby as a whole.

If we thought that green lasers were causing problems, give these 1W units about a month after they start landing on doorsteps.
