It seems Nichia not only has brought us a new 1W 520nm, but also a new 9mm 445nm diode

It's rated at 3.5W typical output power at 2.3A with a maximum current of 3A
to put that in comparison the 9mm we use atm is rated at 1.6W at 1.2A and 1.7A maximum current

MORE THAN TWICE THE RATED POWER!!!

Sources: Aliexpress.com : Buy 445nm 3.5W 450nm 3500mW blue laser diode Nichia TO 5 9mm package high power LD NDB7A75 from Reliable ld tube suppliers on Beijing Powermake-laser Technology Co.,Limited

and old 9mm diode datasheet (NDB7875)

Altrough we have already a group buy/ diode test by ARG running atm I would suggest to make another for this diode

Also I would like to hear what you think about this development that leads to more power
I'm a little scared that in one year everybody can buy a chinese 5W blue laser for 100$
I think it would kill our hobby with very scrict laws if every dumbass shines such a laser at airplanes or people :(

Wow thats amazing:drool: I agree, this advancement poses potential risk to this hobby at the cost of "certain people". Awesome find! +rep:beer:

This raises the question, when is it too much power? 5W handhelds are really scary because they readily ignite most materials with ease.

I'm down. Though getting another $800 after the 520nm diode GB may prove to be more difficult :p

IMO we can't do anything about it chinese companies will always go up with the power :/

Maybe there will be laws like those in australia everywhere and customs will really destroy every laserpointer, but I thinked it over and it's not that bad because lasers would be out the news and if we ship only modules or diodes and hosts and so keep dumb people away from high powered lasers.

For me that's better than dumb people with extreme high powered lasers.

To be honest I would rather have a 5W laser instead a 3W laser:crackup:

p.s. So .. Photonz you speak "fremde Sprachen" ? Greetings from Germany :D

Haha nur ein bisschen und mein Deutsch ist nicht so toll. Aber wann spreche Ich gut deutsch, möchte ich nach deutschland fliegen.

I just like that quote despite me not knowing much of foreign languages:D(yea it's a bit ironic)

I agree it's dangerous and all that, but I'm with shokkunlasers, If these go down in price, I may get one and swap it with my DominatoR's module and driver, though at that much power, I think it might be a good idea to direct press it in a copper sink rather than use a module set screw and thermal paste. I suppose if it's more heat efficient than the current 9mm diodes it may work fine in a module.

someone give two of these to rick trent so he can make a borg.

Lol yeah he'd hit 15 slot easier with these. I'm with you shake. Duty cycle will drop but I can deal with it :) I'm already planning the swaps, but you know even better hosts will follow these monsters. Maybe an easy active cooling solution.

Think your jumping the gun there... wait and see they could be left over N binned single lot leftovers.

Sure there sweet, but not worth that much at least to me. In any event, yes those powers are crazy ARG gets 2 of those in a handheld and then your really pushing for big brothers attention.

So ARG will you open a new thread for the GB ? ;)

It'll definitely be harder. One of the few times I won't be adding any money to the cause.

Two reasons for that
1) That diode terrifies me
2) I am in the process of saving up for something more special/rare than even the 476nm diodes.

Last month was fine a month for the hobby!

These might be able to hit 7W, for crying out loud! The raw divergence values are very similar to the current 9mm diodes. Guess they will replace the diodes on most projectors a few months from now. Unfortunately they might never get as cheap as the current diodes, each projector won't need as many...

I don't want to lose the duty cycle (or the high wavelength) of my Dominator but I might consider buying a Dominator 2.0 or building something with this. But the 520nm is priority ;)

As for laws against lasers, I don't really see how higher power makes them more likely. 1W is enough to draw unwanted attention.

Edit: ARG, might be better to wait and finish the current murder fund before starting another one.

14 by 45 degree divergance 8-/ Gonna be a bit challenging to get all of the output into a decent beam. I see a fat beam build in my future when (if) these get cheaper.

My local surplus shop has a basket of very nice beam expanders in stock right now for cheap. With these new blues and the 1W green diodes in the pipeline I think I may need to see what kind of deal they'll make me if I take all of them 8-)

Holy crap that's scary! my m140 gets me as much power as I'm comfortable with--I have been steering away from the 9mm 445's simply because even my 1.5 watt is almost scary (power wise). For once, I hope these are diodes that DONT get cheaper...last thing we need is 150$ 5 watt handheld laser...too dangerous IMO :)

That is a good question, it looks like the data sheet is legit. Ether way we'll "soon" see.

If you think about it the power we already have with 445 diodes is already in the "scary" powerful range. Technology just keeps on moving.

I can't wait to see what the new hosts will look like to handle all of the heat from the more powerful diode(s).

This scares me as well. But only because I'm gonna want one. The brightness of my <2watt 445 is astonishing. Then the dominator I'm getting is going to be even brighter... THEN this comes along and probably more than doubles that output... That would be an incredible sight.

It will be cool when people do multi diode builds with these... 20Watts will be easily obtainable for those guys!

Ahh, the future
(*counting days until the new 520's cheapen up*)
